    JPJ: 16,337 traffic summons issued during Aidilfitri

    The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 16,377 traffic summons for various offences nationwide through the 2022 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Operation (OP HRA) as of May 8 since last April 29.

    JPJ director-general Datuk Zailani Hashim said they had inspected 89,490 vehicles within the span.

    The department has also issued a total of 776 Notice P22 summons. It is an order for inspection involving five main offences:

    1. Failing to comply with traffic lights
    2. Driving on emergency lanes
    3. Using mobile phones while driving
    4. Over-taking at double lines
    5. Speeding

    Zailani said, “The errant motorists will face court action as they are non-compoundable offences.”

    He said a total of 58,182 speeding offences were also detected through the 45 Automatic Awareness Security System (AwAS) cameras installed at various locations nationwide over the same period.

    The government previously warned against non-compoundable traffic offences. The offenders will need to appear in court to settle these offences.

    Meanwhile, the police recorded 113 deaths in road accidents nationwide in Op Selamat as of May 4 starting from April 29.

    Deputy Inspector-General Razarudin Husain said the police recorded 9,816 accidents nationwide during the six days of the operation.

    “Motorcyclists and pillion riders formed the highest number with 72 deaths, followed by 30 car drivers and passengers, six pedestrians, two involving a van driver and passenger, two deaths in a four-wheel drive as well as one taxi passenger or driver.”

    Razarudin said Selangor recorded the highest number of accidents with 2,160 cases, followed by Johor (1,372), Perak (982), Kuala Lumpur (875), Penang (803), Kedah (659), Pahang (561), and Negeri Sembilan (507).

    He said Melaka recorded 405 accidents followed by Kelantan (484), Sarawak (319), Sabah (311), Terengganu (303), and Perlis (75).
