In the Budget 2022 presentation, Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz presented a proposal for a total exemption on import duty, excise duty and sales tax for electric vehicles (EVs). The Finance Minister also presented a proposal to exempt road tax for EVs up to 100% during the Budget 2022 tabling.
The proposals were made looking at the potential of electric vehicles that have energy-efficient features that can reduce air pollution.
Following the proposals, the Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (PEKEMA) has targeted to sell 500 Tesla units per year over a two-year period of tax and excise exemption for electric vehicles.

Tesla models
According to a report by Paultan, PEKEMA has taken nearly 40 orders of Tesla cars. The units that have been booked are expected to arrive and be delivered to the owners starting January 2022.

Tesla cars brought in from Hong Kong and the United Kingdom
According to PEKEMA, Tesla units sold in Malaysia are brought into the country from Hong Kong. In addition, PEKEMA also has a quota to bring in Tesla cars from the United Kingdom. However, the prices and infotainment specifications of the units from both countries differ.
The Model 3 from the UK has a starting price of RM323,928. Meanwhile, the Model 3 from Hong Kong has a lower price starting at RM288,888.
Regarding the infotainment specifications, the infotainment system for Tesla cars from the UK is equipped with a complete entertainment system. On the other hand, the units from Hong Kong do not come with a complete entertainment system.
Warranty for Tesla models purchased from PEKEMA
Based on the report by Paultan, PEKEMA’s Vice President Raja Petra Marudin said that each unit brought in by PEKEMA is a new and not a secondhand unit.
Further, the warranty provided is the same as the international warranty provided by Tesla, which is for 8 years for the batteries or electric motors. The warranty can be claimed from the country of origin of the car. Meanwhile, other equipment or hardware has a warranty of 4 years.

- Installation of a local telecommunications provider’s SIM card to the car to enable Over-The-Air (OTA) updates
- Downloading and setting the Tesla app for smartphone use by customers
- Updating the map and navigation system for use in Malaysia
- Upgrading devices and software for systems used on cars
- Remote diagnosis through a Tesla system to detect possible problems
- Replacement of tools or components
In addition, PEKEMA has also sent some of their technicians to Tesla Singapore to prepare them for resolving problems that customers may face. PEKEMA technicians can also perform minor repair work directly at the customer’s home in certain circumstances.
Electric vehicle chargers
Through PEKEMA, users of electric cars can use the DC (direct current) fast charging facility provided at PEKEMA member premises.
Currently, there are 7 charging stations provided by PEKEMA in Malaysia. For the convenience of customers, PEKEMA will add 5 more charging stations by the end of 2021, bringing the total number of charging stations to 12 stations.
