The <a href=\"https:\/\/paultan.org\/2021\/02\/16\/miros-road-fatality-report-2020\/#:~:text=The%20Malaysian%20Institute%20of%20Road,compared%20to%202019's%206%2C167%20deaths.\">Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) statistics recorded a total of 4,634 fatal road accidents in 2020<\/a>. The figure is 24% lower than the 2019 data that recorded a total of 6,167 deaths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of you may be more familiar with accidents involving vehicles. These include motorcycle-car, motorcycle-motorcycle, car-car, car-bus, car-lorry and lorry-motorcycle accidents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, know that accidents between cars or motorcycles and wild animals are quite rampant. In this regard, two situations may occur: <strong>1)<\/strong> <strong>vehicles running into accidents <em>after<\/em> avoiding wild animals crossing roads<\/strong>, or<strong> 2) vehicles running Statistically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmetro.com.my\/mutakhir\/2020\/09\/619769\/2055-haiwan-liar-mati-dilenyek-kenderaan\">2,055 wild animals died due to being hit by vehicles between 2015 to 2019<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leopard cats, Asian Golden cats and tapirs are animals that often become victims of road accidents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmetro.com.my\/mutakhir\/2020\/09\/619769\/2055-haiwan-liar-mati-dilenyek-kenderaan\">Harian Metro<\/a>, the former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA), Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, said that roadkills occur when wild animals try to cross the road or highway to get to the forest across the road. The animals are looking for food, mates for breeding or more suitable habitat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other animals that often become victims of road accidents include bears, elephants, leopards, wild goats, tigers and deer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fatal_accidents_involving_vehicles_and_wild_animals_in_2021\"><\/span>Fatal accidents involving vehicles and wild animals in 2021<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>January 12, 2021<\/strong> &#8211; In Kampung Gajah, Perak, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/officialperakgazette\/posts\/pemandu-proton-wira-maut-semasa-elak-bangkai-babioleh-wartawan-perak-gazzettekam\/448465816562549\/\">a man died when his car ran into an accident with a trailer. The victim was avoiding a dead wild boar<\/a> on the road. It was believed that the wild boar was hit by another vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>January 31, 2021 &#8211;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utusan.com.my\/berita\/2021\/01\/lagi-kes-tapir-maut-dilanggar-kenderaan\/\">A male tapir weighing about 450kg was found dead, believed to have been hit by a vehicle at Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai<\/a>. The eight-year-old male tapir suffered injuries to its body and mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>February 12, 2021 &#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utusanborneo.com.my\/2021\/02\/14\/penunggang-motosikal-terlanggar-haiwan-liar-maut\">In Beaufort, Sabah, a motorcyclist died in an accident in Jalan Bandau, Membakut. It was suspected that his motorcycle collided with a wild animal<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>April 25, 2021 &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharian.com.my\/berita\/kes\/2021\/04\/810696\/elak-haiwan-melintas-dipercayai-punca-nahas-tiga-maut\">Three individuals including a boy died in Kampung Padang Lanjut, Padang Terap.
