Transport Ministry is studying the need to ensure all new motorcycles above 150cc have anti-lock braking systems (ABS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Datuk Wee Ka Siong said the ministry will approach the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) to conduct a detailed study on mandating the ABS technology. He expected to finalise the research within six months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the implementation of the requirement may take place within two years after completing the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Miros studies, the mandatory ABS will be able to reduce accidents and deaths involving motorcyclists by up to 30%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The same time period will be used to amend existing rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When ABS is mandatory later, we hope to see an increase in the level of motorcycle safety. We also hope this will further reduce the probability of deaths due to road accidents involving motorcycle users in Malaysia.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
