It can start almost anywhere in the human body which consists of trillions of cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Seven_facts_about_cancer_in_Malaysia\"><\/span>Seven facts about cancer in Malaysia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Cancer_can_happen_to_anyone_regardless_of_age\"><\/span>1. Cancer can happen to anyone regardless of age<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some may think that cancer will only attack the elderly. The fact is cancer can also happen to young ones including babies. However, compared to adults, cancer is rare in children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Malaysia, <a href=\"https:\/\/maspho.org\/cancer-information\/#whats-cancer\">the incidence of paediatric cancer<\/a> is about 77.4 per million children aged less than 15 years. Additionally, in comparison to adult cancers, <a href=\"https:\/\/maspho.org\/cancer-information\/#whats-cancer\">the cure rates<\/a> for children are much higher and more than 60% of all children can now completely heal (note that each type of cancer has its own cure rate.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Stages_3_and_4_cancer_cases_increased_from_587_to_637\"><\/span>2. Stages 3 and 4 cancer cases increased from 58.7% to 63.7% <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Malaysia National Cancer Registry Report (MNCRR) 2012-2016 revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/codeblue.galencentre.org\/2020\/01\/03\/cancer-cases-rise-in-malaysia-chinese-most-prone\/\">the percentage of cancer cases<\/a> detected in the late stages of 3 and 4 increased from 58.7% from 2007 to 2011 to 63.7% in 2012 to 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Obesity_is_one_of_the_causes_of_13_cancer_types\"><\/span>3. Obesity is one of the causes of 13 cancer types<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye said that obesity is one of the contributors to as many as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesundaily.my\/local\/obesity-related-cancer-emerging-problem-for-malaysia-lee-DF632137\">13 cancer types<\/a>. These include breast, colorectal, uterine, kidney, head and neck, esophageal, pancreatic, endometrium, prostate, gall bladder, and thyroid cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultant medical oncologist Dr Azura Rozila Ahmad similarly said that obesity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharian.com.my\/wanita\/sihat\/2019\/08\/597836\/kanser-punca-kematian-kedua-tertinggi-di-malaysia\">one of the causes<\/a> of 13 types of cancer. More worryingly, Dr Azura further said that Malaysia has the highest prevalence of obesity among adults in South-East Asia, according to the World Population Review 2019. Those who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharian.com.my\/wanita\/sihat\/2019\/08\/597836\/kanser-punca-kematian-kedua-tertinggi-di-malaysia\">obese<\/a> are more prone to cancer compared to those with a normal body mass index (BMI), added Dr Azura.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_One_in_nine_females_and_one_in_10_males_in_Malaysia_get_cancer\"><\/span>4. One in nine females and one in 10 males in Malaysia get cancer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1BuPWrb05N2Jez6sEP8VM5r6JtJtlPN5W\/view\">The Malaysia National Cancer Registry Report 2012-2016<\/a> found that cancer incidence rates from 2012 to 2016 increased by 2.3 in females. In males, the rates reduced slightly by 0.8 per 100,000 populations, compared to the 2007-2011 period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top three cancers among Malaysian females from 2012 to 2016 were breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer. For males, the top three were colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Cancer_is_the_fourth_leading_cause_of_death_in_Malaysia\"><\/span>5. Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Malaysian study on cancer survival (MySCan) <a href=\"https:\/\/medic.upm.edu.my\/upload\/dokumen\/20191004072046Editorial_Oct_2019_(1).pdf\">revealed<\/a> that cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia. In 2016, cancer contributed to 12.6% of all deaths in government hospitals and 26.7% in private hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately, there are 37,000 new cancer diagnoses every year. The number <a href=\"https:\/\/medic.upm.edu.my\/upload\/dokumen\/20191004072046Editorial_Oct_2019_(1).pdf\">may rise<\/a> to more than 55,000 cases by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_The_survival_rate_for_cancer_patients_has_improved\"><\/span>6. The survival rate for cancer patients has improved<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Leukaemia and lymphoma are <em>among<\/em> the most curable cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultant haematologist Dr Ng Soo Chin said to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/lifestyle\/health\/2019\/12\/25\/leukaemia-and-lymphoma-have-a-good-survival-rate\">The Star<\/a> that the belief that cancer leads to immediate death is no longer true. With optimal treatment, the majority of cancer patients go into remission and are considered cured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_30-50_of_cancer_are_preventable\"><\/span>7. 30-50% of cancer are preventable<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to consultant medical oncologist Dr Azura Rozila Ahmad, 30 to 50% of cancer are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharian.com.my\/wanita\/sihat\/2019\/08\/597836\/kanser-punca-kematian-kedua-tertinggi-di-malaysia\">preventable<\/a>. He underwent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/sport\/badminton-lee-chong-wei-reveals-how-he-broke-down-after-receiving-cancer-diagnosis\">33 sessions<\/a> of proton therapy treatment, where beams are aimed at the cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He became cancer-free in 2019.
