51 Motorcyclists Summonsed for Not Wearing Helmet

Did you know that wearing a helmet properly can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 70% and reduce the risk of death by up to 40%?

The percentage is shared by Muar Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD), based on the World Health Organization (WHO) data.

Unfortunately, some motorcyclists ride without a helmet, putting their lives at risk.

Muar’s BSPTD Enforcement Team recently issued 51 summonses to motorcyclists for not wearing a helmet during “Operasi Motosikal” in Muar from Feb 9 to 13.

“Operasi Motosikal” focused on the offence of not wearing a helmet. The operation aimed to make motorcyclists responsible road users. This is especially because motorcyclists are the highest contributors to fatal accidents, as shared by Muar’s BSPTD.

Not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle is an offence

Wearing a helmet while riding is mandatory. If you fail to do so, you can get a summons.

According to Rule 4, Motorcycle (Helmet) Rules 1973, motorcyclists who do not wear a helmet while riding can be charged a maximum compound of up to RM300.

    Wear your helmet right

A helmet cannot provide the best protection if not worn properly.

You need to install and fasten the helmet strap neatly and not loosely.

Additionally, if you want to use a helmet fitted with a visor, you are encouraged to get a clear and colourless visor.

Wear a helmet that meets safety features

In Malaysia, you are advised to wear a genuine helmet, approved by the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM). This is to ensure that the helmet meets the specified safety features.

Please avoid wearing a half helmet as it can endanger the wearer. A half helmet may be attractive in shape, but it provides less protection than a regular helmet.

Below are examples of a regular helmet that can provide better protection than a half helmet.
