Tyres are critical components of a car. Failure to maintain and service car tyres can endanger the drivers, passengers and other road users.
Additionally, failure to check tyre air pressure, wear level, among others, may lead to leaked, punctured or flat tyres while driving.
In this article, we will share how to change car tyres in case you need to do it yourself.
Step 1: Park your car at a safe place
Remain calm and move your car to a safe place such as to the shoulder of the road or emergency lane, or an area easily seen by other road users.
Please do not park on a hilly or uneven area. Additionally, ensure that the road is flat to avoid your car from slipping out of the car jack.
Step 2: Place a warning triangle sign
Previously, Bjak has shared the essential items in a car emergency kit which include a warning triangle.
As soon as you park your car at a safe place, ensure that you place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind your car. This is to caution other road users of your emergency and, in turn, avoid accidents.
Step 3: Take out the necessary tools to change tyres
Before changing the tyres, take out your spare tyres and the necessary tools to change tyres which are a jack and lug wrench from the rear bonnet. Take out the nuts specific for the rim to replace your sports rim.
Step 4: Loosen tyre nuts
Use a lug wrench to remove the tyre nuts or screws. Before that, remember to place the tyres on a flat surface to prevent the car from slipping out of the car jack when changing the tyres.
Step 5: Jack your car
Place the jack near your car. Avoid jacking your car too high to prevent it from slipping. Jack your car until you can sufficiently rotate the tyres.
Step 6: Change car tyres
Remove the car nuts in a counterclockwise motion. Then, remove the flat tyres with the spare ones and immediately tighten the nuts.
Step 7: Tighten tyre nuts
Lower your car using the jack. Step on the lug wrench to ensure the screw or nut grip is firm and secure. You are advised to tighten the tyre nuts diagonally.
Step 8: Replace spare tyres
Despite changing your tyres, you are advised to change the spare tyres at any tyre outlet immediately. This is as most spare tyres can only move on average between 80 km to 113 km with a maximum speed of 80km/h.
