Insurance, Tyres & Emergency Kit – Your Complete Pre-Trip Checklist
Planning a road trip? With scenic highways and diverse destinations, Malaysia is perfect for long drives. But before you hit the road, it’s important to check a few essentials to ensure a safe and smooth journey.
1. Check Your Car Insurance
Why It Matters:
If an accident or breakdown happens during your trip, a valid insurance policy helps cover repairs, towing, and more.
What to Check:
- Is your policy active and valid?
- Is it comprehensive or third-party?
- Do you have add-ons like roadside assistance, windscreen, or flood coverage?
- Keep the emergency hotline of your insurer handy
Tip: If you’re using a platform like BJAK, you can check your policy status online and add extra coverage if needed.
2. Inspect Tyre Pressure & Condition
Underinflated or worn-out tyres can be dangerous, especially on highways.
Check:
- Tyre pressure (usually 30–35 PSI, see label on driver’s door)
- Tread depth – should be more than 1.6mm
- Any cracks, bulges, or uneven wear?
- Is your spare tyre in good condition?
Tip: Replace tyres every 4–5 years even if they still look fine.
3. Engine Oil, Radiator Water & Brake Fluid
Your car’s systems must be in top shape before long-distance driving.
Check:
- Engine oil level and colour
- Radiator coolant level
- Brake fluid and windshield washer fluid levels
If your car hasn’t been serviced in a while, it’s best to do a full service before your trip.
4. Emergency Kit: Must-Have Essentials
Never go on a road trip without these items:
- Power bank or in-car phone charger
- Torchlight or flashlight
- Spare tyre + jack + wrench
- Warning triangle
- Jumper cables
- Basic first aid kit (plasters, antiseptic, painkillers)
- Drinking water and snacks
Optional: Fire extinguisher, tow rope
5. Update Your GPS & Navigation
In rural areas, mobile signal may be weak or unavailable. Make sure:
- Waze or Google Maps is up to date
- Offline maps are downloaded in advance
- Power source is ready (charger or power bank)
6. Prepare Important Documents
Have either physical copies or digital versions of:
- Valid driving licence
- Car insurance policy
- ID card or passport
- Touch ‘n Go card, loaded with enough balance
