Malaysia Has The 12th Powerful Passport In The World

    Powerful passports - cover

One can list so many great things about Malaysia such as food, lifestyle, culture, travel spots and more. While there is certainly more than one thing to be thankful for, having a powerful passport feels great because it lets you travel anywhere without much effort. That is exactly how many Malaysians are probably feeling about the recent global passport ranking by the Henley Passport Index 2024.

    Henley Passport Index 2024

The global passport ranking places Malaysia at the 12th spot this year, along with two other countries, Cyprus and Liechtenstein with a total “visa-free score” of 182. This score is determined by the number of destinations accessible without a pre-arrival visa, signifying that Malaysians enjoy visa-free entry to 182 out of 227 global travel destinations.

At the beginning of 2023, the Malaysian passport held the 14th position globally with a score of 179. Six months later, it ascended to the 11th position with a score of 180. Nonetheless, with the current ranking, 35 countries have outranked Malaysia with a higher passport power, and Singapore maintains its leading position, sharing it with France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain, each boasting a score of 194.

    Malaysia ranks 2nd in ASEAN

Among ASEAN nations, Malaysia has the second most powerful passport behind Singapore, followed by Brunei in the third spot. The Henley Passport Index evaluates all 199 passports worldwide using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), cross-referencing each against all 227 global travel destinations, including those without their passports.

The mobility score of a passport increases by one for each destination that allows visa-free entry or grants an electronic travel authority (ETA) or visitor’s permit upon arrival. However, destinations requiring visas or necessitating government approval for a visa on arrival are not considered “visa-free” and do not contribute to the overall score.
