Learn to Calculate Roadtax for Imported (CBU) & Local (CKD) Cars

Ever wondered why imported cars (CBU) have higher roadtax compared to local ones (CKD)? Many don’t realise that Malaysia’s roadtax rates are calculated based on engine capacity (cc) and the type of vehicle assembly. Let’s break down how to actually calculate roadtax so you know exactly what to expect — and don’t end up overpaying.

1. The Difference Between CBU & CKD

Vehicle TypeMeaningExample
CBU (Completely Built-Up)Fully assembled imported cars from overseasBMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Alphard
CKD (Completely Knocked-Down)Cars assembled locally in MalaysiaPerodua, Proton, Honda Malaysia
CBU vehicles usually face higher roadtax rates, especially for engines above 1,600cc. This is because they’re classified as fully imported vehicles and subject to import-related surcharges.

2. Basic Formula for Roadtax Calculation

For private petrol vehicles in Peninsular Malaysia:

  • 1,000cc – 1,600cc → Base rate: RM20–RM90

Above 1,600cc:

RM90 + [(cc – 1600) × Additional Rate]

Additional Rate Guide:

  • RM0.40/cc for 1,601–1,800cc
  • RM0.50/cc for 1,801–2,000cc
  • RM1.00/cc for above 2,000cc

Example:
CBU car with 2,000cc engine

= RM90 + (400 × RM0.50)

= RM290

However, for imported CBU models, the surcharge can increase by 2x–3x, depending on the vehicle type and registration region (Sabah/Sarawak usually have lower rates).

3. Factors That Affect Roadtax Rates

  • Engine Capacity (cc): The higher the cc, the more you pay.
  • Fuel Type: Diesel cars pay more than petrol ones.
  • Vehicle Origin: CBU models have higher rates due to import tax structures.
  • Registration Location: Rates in Peninsular Malaysia differ from Sabah and Sarawak.

4. Use the Malaysia Roadtax Calculator

Don’t want to calculate manually?
Use the Roadtax Calculator on Bjak’s website — just enter your number plate or engine cc, and the system will instantly show the accurate rate based on CBU/CKD type, engine size, and location.
It also helps you check insurance premium estimates automatically.

Conclusion

Roadtax in Malaysia isn’t just about engine size — it also depends on whether your car is CBU or CKD. So if you’re driving an imported vehicle, don’t be surprised if your roadtax costs more.
For quick and accurate checking, always calculate roadtax using online platforms— precise, automatic, and tailored to your car model.
