You can claim from the party concerned for trees falling on a vehicle due to road or landscaping work
If a tree hits your vehicle due to road or landscaping work, you can make a claim directly to the council or department concerned.
For example, on December 22, a Perodua Axia was crushed by a tree more than 100 years old near a hotel in Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. Following the incident, the Socio-Economic Executive Director of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said his party had met with the vehicle owner and informed him that he could make an insurance claim with DBKL for the damage.
Can you make a car insurance claim if a fallen tree damages your car?
Can you make a car insurance claim if a tree crashes down on your car?
Basically, car insurance does not cover damage due to natural disasters such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, hurricanes, storms, and fallen trees. Even if you have a comprehensive policy, you still do not get insurance coverage for vehicle damage due to natural disasters.
However, you can make an insurance claim if you have special perils cover that protects your vehicle in the event of natural disasters.
Get special perils cover
The incident that happened to the Perodua Myvi and Honda Civic could happen to any car. For protection, we advise you to take special perils cover. Note that you can only get this additional coverage if you have comprehensive insurance.
How much is the additional premium for the special perils cover? Typically, the premium for this coverage is 0.5% of your car’s sum insured. Note that the additional premium is subject to the premium set by the respective insurance or takaful company. As such, check first with your insurer how much you need to add.
To give you a clearer picture, consider that the sum insured for your car is RM50,000. You will have to pay 0.5% of that amount to get the special perils cover. Hence, the amount you will have to pay is RM250 for a year’s coverage.
