5 Things Your Motorcycle Insurance Won’t Cover

Things Your Motorcycle Insurance Won't Cover

Do you ride a motorcycle? Are you aware that road accidents are more likely to involve motorcyclists than other road users?

A comprehensive insurance policy is the best coverage for you and your motorcycle in an untoward accident.

However, some situations will not be covered although you purchase comprehensive insurance. Here is a list of situations that your insurer will not cover.

Motorcycle damage due to criminal offences

Insurance will not cover motorcycle damage due to criminal offenses

In the event of an accident, you will not enjoy insurance coverage if you ride a motorcycle under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Worse, if the accident involves another party and causes injury or death, you will have to bear the cost. This is because you will not receive any compensation from your insurer.

According to the law, it is illegal to ride a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol. You may face prosecution under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

You are liable to imprisonment for a term of 3 to 10 years and a fine of RM8,000 to RM20,000.

    False motorcycle insurance claims

If you provide incorrect or false information, your claim can be rejected

If you provide incorrect or false information regarding your claim, your insurer can reject your claim application.

Say that the insurer has paid for any claim to a third party, the insurance company is entitled to reclaim the amount paid and any costs incurred from you.

    Use of motorcycles for racing

    Bike racing

Your insurance company will not provide coverage if you or the permitted named rider rides your motorcycle to:

    1. Practise or participate in any motorsports event, competition, treasure hunt, rally, race pacemaker, reliability test or speed test
    2. Ride at any racing circuit

However, you can enjoy insurance coverage if anything happens to you in the situations in question. But it is only under the condition that you extend your policy plan with additional cover for riding in competitions.

    Use of motorcycles abroad

    Biker

Your insurer will also not cover any claim for any incidents that happen abroad. You are not eligible for coverage if you use or ride the insured motorcycle outside Malaysia.

However, some insurance companies widen the coverage to certain countries. For example, AmAssurance provides policy coverage to Singapore and Brunei. This coverage allows you to make an insurance claim for motorcycle damage used and ridden in the two countries.

You may refer to an insurance agent or company to get more details.

    Motorcycles ridden by unauthorised riders

    Motorcycle insurance claim

Your insurance company will not pay for the losses incurred for any accidents, damages or liability caused by an unnamed rider who rides your motorcycle.

You should not arbitrarily lend your motorcycle to an unnamed rider as your insurance company will not provide coverage should anything happen.

For your information, you could extend the coverage to other riders by naming them as named drivers in your insurance policy.

Understand the situations not covered by motorcycle insurance

You need to understand the details of your insurance policy.

Make sure that you only allow those named as your authorised rider to use your motorcycle. This will save you from the hassle of an insurance claim. If you often share your motorcycle with other individuals, we advise you to add ‘All Rider’ coverage to your policy.
