Frequently asked questions regarding petrol
The following are the answers to a few questions regarding petrol frequently asked by car users.
What does RON mean?
RON or Research Octane Number is a form of fuel quality and performance rating based on the fuel’s quality or resistance to auto-ignition or engine knocking (pre-ignition). In other words, RON determines the resistance and ability of the fuel to withstand its compression before ignition.
The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating. Basically, a higher-powered engine requires a higher RON. In order to check the RON that is suitable for your vehicle, please check your vehicle manual.
What are the differences between RON95 and RON97?
The number on RON95 or RON97 indicates the amount of hydrocarbon chain. If the amount of hydrocarbon chain is higher, this means a higher compression rate is needed for the fuel to ignite. Besides, a higher compression ratio will produce a higher horsepower per engine weight, thereby resulting in higher engine performance.
In addition, RON97 petrol is said to be cleaner as it contains less sulphur. This will avoid the formation of sulphur dioxide which is a contributor to haze.
Can RON95 petrol be used for the RON97 engine?
RON95 petrol has a lower resistance ability to be used for a RON97 engine that has a higher performance.
Therefore, if RON95 petrol is used for a RON97 engine, the fuel will ignite prematurely before it is ignited by the spark plugs. This will reduce your engine performance and may damage your engine.
Can RON97 petrol be used for the RON95 engine?
If you use RON97 petrol for a RON95 engine, this will neither give any negative effect nor improve the performance or ability of your vehicle engine.
However, given that RON97 petrol is sold at a higher price than RON95 petrol, this will be a slight waste.
In addition, RON97 petrol is usually used for engines with higher compression and is recommended for vehicles with an engine capacity of 2,500cc and above.
Is RON97 better than RON95?
Both RON95 and RON97 petrol contain the same amount of power per litre. However, their key difference is their resistance to high temperatures and pressure without detonating before the spark plugs ignite.
Further, as mentioned, using RON97 petrol for a RON95 engine will not increase the engine power as both RON97 and RON95 petrol contains the same amount of hydrocarbon. However, using RON95 petrol for an engine that has a higher performance will reduce the engine’s power and efficiency.
You are recommended to use RON95 petrol for a casual drive and RON97 petrol for an aggressive drive. Besides, you should also consider your engine capacity and financial capability.
Will using RON97 give more savings compared to using RON95?
Using either RON petrol will not give you significant savings. However, it is said that RON97 usage will give you savings for aggressive usage. This is because an aggressive drive for a long duration will increase the engine temperature thereby leading to engine knocking. Therefore, using RON97 petrol will slow down the ignition timing and help optimise engine operation.
Which RON is suitable to be used?
You are advised to use fuel with a RON index recommended by your car manufacturer. For instance, if your car manufacturer recommends RON95 petrol for your car model, then that is the most suitable fuel for your car. Using the right RON fuel as recommended by your car manufacturer will result in better car performance.
Between Petronas, Shell, Caltex and Petron, which is better?
Certain fuel producers such as Petronas, Shell, Caltex and Petron mix their petrol with additives. The additives function as a catalyst to increase the RON value, ease the combustion process and ensure engine cleanliness from carbon deposits.
As every car engine is different, the effect of using fuel of a certain brand may differ according to the car model. Hence, it is advisable that you use the recommended fuel type based on your type of car, usage and driving style.
Is it okay to mix different fuel brands?
Every fuel brand has a different formulation for their petrol. However, the petrol differences may not be apparent, unless you use RON95 petrol for an engine that is specific for RON97 petrol.
Hence, as long as you use suitable fuel as recommended by your car manufacturer, then there is no problem to mix fuel of different brands.
