Govt considers mandatory ABS for motorcycles above 150cc

Govt mulls mandatory ABS for motorcycles above 150cc

Transport Ministry is studying the need to ensure all new motorcycles above 150cc have anti-lock braking systems (ABS).

Minister Datuk Wee Ka Siong said the ministry will approach the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) to conduct a detailed study on mandating the ABS technology. He expected to finalise the research within six months.

He said the implementation of the requirement may take place within two years after completing the study.

According to Miros studies, the mandatory ABS will be able to reduce accidents and deaths involving motorcyclists by up to 30%.

“The same time period will be used to amend existing rules.

“When ABS is mandatory later, we hope to see an increase in the level of motorcycle safety. We also hope this will further reduce the probability of deaths due to road accidents involving motorcycle users in Malaysia.”

Wee recited data analysis from Miros, saying over 6,000 deaths were recorded in 2019. He expressed his concern over 60% of that involved motorcycles.

“Among the main factors of motorcycle accidents in Malaysia are the motorcycles skidding or failing to dodge while riding.

“Ineffective braking systems are one of the causes. Thus, a better and more effective braking system is highly hoped for and encouraged in our search for solutions to end motorcycle accidents.”

What is Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)?

Here we share some information regarding ABS and how it works to prevent possible accidents.

    How does ABS work motorcycle

    What is ABS?

ABS or an Anti-Lock Braking System is safety equipment that prevents the wheels from locking up under emergency, panic, or harsh braking conditions. Nearly all newly-produced cars nearly nowadays come with an ABS.

    How does ABS work?

Your vehicle’s tire may experience an immediate loss of traction when you suddenly brake. This situation may cause the tire to skid resulting in a brake lock-up.

For example, the motorist may lose control over the steering when the vehicle in motion losses its grip.

Here comes the ABS to the rescue. The system works by pulsing your brakes when the car detects that your wheels are locking up under hard braking. It ensures that the wheels do not lock up under hard braking, thus, possibly allowing the driver to steer to safety.

ABS also allows you to maintain steering control of your vehicle even when stopping distances are increased.
