7 Reasons Why Your Roadtax Can’t Be Renewed

Infographic showing seven main reasons why roadtax cannot be renewed in Malaysia: expired policy, unpaid summons, JPJ restrictions, mismatched owner details, ownership change not updated, incomplete documents, and system maintenance. Each reason is represented with a relevant icon.

Introduction

Ever got that annoying “not eligible for renewal” message when trying to renew your roadtax online? Yeah, we’ve all been there. The system looks like it’s broken, but actually, it’s just doing its job. Here are some of the usual reasons your roadtax can’t be renewed

1. Your insurance expired

Number one reason — expired insurance. JPJ’s system won’t even let you proceed if your policy isn’t active. Once it’s expired (even for a few days), you’ll need to renew the insurance first before trying again. No shortcut for this one.

2. Vehicle details don’t match up

Sometimes it’s something tiny — a wrong letter in your chassis number or a small typo in the owner’s name. Doesn’t matter how small, the system will reject it. Double-check your insurance info matches your grant exactly.

3. You’ve got unpaid summons

Got a few tickets you “forgot” to pay? That could be the reason. JPJ or PDRM summons can stop the renewal process. Settle them first, especially if any have warrants attached.

4. Ownership not updated

Bought a second-hand car recently? If JPJ hasn’t updated the ownership record yet, you can’t renew the roadtax under your name because the system still lists the old owner as the vehicle’s owner.

5. JPJ restriction or blacklist

If JPJ blacklists your car or flags it for issues like fake roadtax or other technical problems, the system will automatically block your renewal, and you’ll have to visit the nearest JPJ branch to clear it.

6. Puspakom inspection expired

For certain vehicles (especially commercial, e-hailing, or recond), your Puspakom inspection must be valid. If it’s expired, you can’t renew until it’s redone.

7. System or server hiccup

And sometimes… it’s just the system acting up. JPJ’s server can lag or take time to sync data from insurers. If you’re sure everything’s fine, wait a while and try again later usually it sorts itself out.

The quick fix

If you’d rather skip the guesswork why your roadtax can’t be renewed, just use BJAK. Their system automatically checks your insurance and roadtax details, so if anything’s off — like a data mismatch or expired policy — you’ll know right away. Plus, you can renew everything in one go without leaving your house.
