Insurance & Roadtax Renewal After Vehicle Owner’s Death

Insurance & Roadtax Renewal After Vehicle Owner’s Death

Introduction

When a vehicle owner passes away, insurance & roadtax renewal can’t immediately be done under the heir’s name. The process must go through two stages — a temporary renewal under the deceased owner’s name, followed by an official ownership transfer at JPJ before any future renewal can be done under the heir.
This article explains the required documents, renewal steps, and how BJAK can help heirs keep the vehicle legally protected throughout the transition period.

1. Important Documents for Heirs

Before starting the renewal, ensure all necessary documents are prepared:

  • Deceased owner’s death certificate.
  • Copy of the heir’s or authorized representative’s IC.
  • Copy of the vehicle grant/VOC.
  • Authorization letter (if managed by a third party).
  • Proof of relationship (e.g., marriage certificate or letter confirming next-of-kin).

Having complete documents helps insurance companies and JPJ process the application smoothly.

2. Temporary Insurance Renewal Process

Until the ownership transfer is completed, heirs can renew insurance under the deceased owner’s name for temporary coverage:

  • Contact BJAK or the insurer to check the current policy status.
  • Submit all required heir and vehicle documents.
  • Choose the same insurance plan or update coverage if needed.
  • The new policy will still be issued under the deceased owner’s name.

Important note: This temporary renewal only ensures valid coverage. Heirs should complete the JPJ ownership transfer before the next renewal cycle.

3. Renewing Roadtax After the Owner’s Death

For vehicles still registered under the deceased owner:

  • Roadtax can only be renewed for a maximum of 6 months through JPJ or Pos Malaysia.
  • After ownership is officially transferred, the roadtax can be renewed normally under the heir’s name.

Ensure all new ownership details are updated in MyJPJ to avoid renewal errors later.

Conclusion

Renewing insurance & roadtax after an owner’s death can be complex, but it’s manageable with the right steps.

While waiting for ownership transfer, heirs can renew temporary insurance under the deceased owner’s name and a 6-month roadtax at JPJ or Pos Malaysia.

BJAK simplifies this process by helping heirs check policy details, select a plan, and handle renewals digitally — ensuring the vehicle remains legally protected during the transition.
