Parking in the Open? Here Are Tips to Keep Your Car Less Warm

Keep your car less warm when parking in the open

Are you left with no choice but to park your car in the open? After leaving it in the sun, do you feel unpleasant when entering your vehicle?

It is no surprise if you feel unpleasant as the temperature inside a car left in the sun is higher than the outside temperature. The temperature can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius even when the weather outside is only around 32 degrees Celsius.

The inside of a car can be hotter as the car windows and interiors such as seats absorb the sunlight through the windows, increasing the temperature inside the vehicle.

To avoid an unpleasant situation when entering your car left in the sun, Bjak will share five practical tips to keep your car less warm.

Keep the air conditioner flaps open

Keep the air conditioner flaps open when parking your car in the open

Typically, when driving with the air conditioner running, we will turn on the recirculation button to close the air conditioner flaps. This is to ensure the cool air from the air conditioner recirculates in the car and cools down the air in your vehicle.

However, when parking your car in the open and hot weather, we advise you to turn off the recirculation button to open the air conditioner flaps. When the air conditioner flaps are open, the outside air will enter the car and be vented out, reducing the temperature inside the vehicle.

Ensure that you only open the air conditioner flaps when your car is parked. Opening the flaps when driving will cause the air in your vehicle to be warm.

    Slightly roll down your windows

Lower your car windows slightly when parking your car in the open to reduce the heat in your vehicle. The small opening lets the built-up heat escape and helps facilitate some airflow through the car’s cabin.

Make sure that you only slightly roll down your windows to prevent a break-in. For safety, ensure that the parking area is visible and has a decent amount of vehicles.

Use a sunshade or window visor

Using a sunshade or window visor is an easy way to prevent your car from becoming too hot. A sunshade placed on the windscreen can prevent waves of heat emitted through the sun from penetrating the windscreen.

Put up a sunshade or window visor when parking your car in the open for an extended period. Keep it even cooler by also putting a sunshade in your rear windscreen.

    Get your car windows tinted

Having tinted windows has been considered necessary for many car owners in the country. The use of tinted windows helps reduce the sunlight penetration, thus reducing the temperature inside the car.

However, keep in mind that it is an offence if you do not follow the regulation on the use of car window tints set by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). You can read our past article on car window tints for more information.

Cover your seats and steering wheel

One of the reasons your car gets hot is most car seats and steering wheels are made of heat-absorbing materials.

Therefore, cover your car seats and steering wheel before leaving your car in the open. You can use a fabric cover, shirt or towel as a cover to prevent the sunlight from radiating directly towards the interiors.

Follow the tips when parking your car in the open

You may want to use the above tips the next time you park your car in the sun. Taking the above measures can reduce the temperature in your vehicle and make you more comfortable.
