Good news to electric vehicle (EV) owners and persons with disabilities (OKU) who own motor vehicles!
The government, through the Road Transport Department (JPJ), will offer a full motor vehicle licence fee (road tax) exemption for electric vehicles (EVs) and motor vehicles for OKU.
The road tax exemption for EVs will take effect from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2025. The road tax exemption for vehicles for OKU will also take effect from January 1, 2022.
Road tax exemption for electric vehicles (EVs)
Transport minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the motor vehicle licence exemption only applies to full EV vehicles. The EVs must be fully battery or fuel cells powered to qualify for the exemption.
Explained Wee, the exemption does not apply to hybrid vehicles equipped with either petrol or diesel-powered internal combustion engines.
EV owners can apply for the road tax exemption from February 15, 2022.
Road tax exemption for vehicles for persons with disabilities (OKU)
Wee said the motor vehicle licence exemption for vehicles for persons with disabilities (OKU) only applies to motor vehicles specially modified for OKU. For motor vehicles not specially modified for OKU, the exemption only applies to Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicles and national cars.
According to Wee, eligible motor vehicles must be registered and licenced under the particular OKU. The OKU must also be registered with and have a valid OKU card issued by the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
Wee added they also extend the motor vehicle licence exemption to motor vehicles registered or owned by registered OKU parents or guardians and have OKU children and disabled spouses registered with JKM.
Road tax exemption application for motor vehicles for OKU will begin on March 15, 2022.
Eligible vehicle owners who have obtained a road tax after January 1, 2022, but before the application opening date, can get a rebate
Eligible vehicle owners who have obtained a new or renewed their motor vehicle licence after January 1, 2022, but before the application opening date for either exemption are eligible for a rebate.
The vehicle owners or representatives may visit any JPJ counter to surrender their road tax. Following that, they can get a rebate to a prescribed amount.
“Subsequently, the vehicle owner or representative can proceed to apply for the motor vehicle licence exemption,” said Wee.
