Changing Your Car Paint? Follow This JPJ Registration Guide

Colour is one of the main criteria that people usually look into before buying a car. Choosing a car colour can be tricky as some may prefer bright colours such as blue or red while some are into dark colours like black.

According to Carsome Insight 2020, achromatic colours (white and silver) are the most popular car colours in Malaysia. They are followed by black, grey, blue, and others.

Our preference may change over time, and the same goes for the colour of our car. You may want to change it to other colours after using it for some time.

    Must get JPJ’s approval

But hold up! You need to get approval from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) if you plan to repaint your car. The approval is in line with Section (12) JPJ Act 1987 – inspection of motor vehicles and information to the Director-General.

The application must be made within 7 days to prevent legal actions such as being fined.

    Guideline to change car’s colour

The steps are very simple to follow, and there will be no fees imposed. You just have to follow the steps below:

    2. After repainting your car, you have to go to a JPJ office for inspection and information update
    3. Fill up the JPJ K8 form to change your vehicle details and submit it to the officer in charge

*For your convenience, you may download the JPJ K8 form first via JPJ’s official portal to avoid congestion at the office.

JPJ guideline to register for new car's colour

According to Section (12) of the Road Transport Act 1987, all owners who change their car’s colour will be handed an Inspection Direction Notice or PG1.

The notice is given so that the owner declares to JPJ the car’s colour change. JPJ usually does not issue a summons if you change the colour of your vehicle. However, a summons will be issued should you ignore the Inspection Direction Notice or PG1.

Why do you need to get JPJ’s approval for car paint?

Why is it necessary to get JPJ’s approval for a new car paint?

It is important to ensure details such as the current colour of your car is recorded in the system. In an untoward incident such as an accident or, theft, the new registered car’s colour will be valid to be used as a reference.

If you do not obtain JPJ’s approval, dispute during the claims process may arise due to the differences between the registration record and the car’s current condition after modification.

Scenario: If your vehicle runs into an accident and the insurer finds that the colour of the car stated in the registration record is not the same as the vehicle’s current colour, the insurer may not bear the loss suffered by the owner. So, it will be your loss.

Therefore, make sure to get approval from JPJ immediately if you decide to repaint your car.
