To your knowledge, insurance companies offer coverage to their policyholders and authorised drivers in the event of any untoward events such as road accidents. As a vehicle owner, you need to ensure that your vehicle is safe and driven by an authorised driver only. This will allow you to file an insurance claim in case anything happens later.
In this article, we will briefly explain to you who are the ‘individuals’ that can drive your car as stated in the terms and conditions of the insurance policy.
Who can drive your car?
Anyone can drive your vehicle so along as the individual:
- Has valid licence of the relevant class of car
- Is not disqualified from driving by law or for other reasons. Examples are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Has the owner’s permission to drive
But please take note!
You may need to bear additional excess according to the: i) driver’s age, ii) the type of license the driver has, or iii) whether the driver is not an authorised driver.
Risks of letting “just anyone” drives your vehicle
The third condition states that anyone is allowed to drive your vehicle so long as they have the owner’s permission. It may look simple. But it can be risky and cause problems in insurance claims.
Therefore, ensure that the person driving your vehicle is named in the policy. This helps to assure your vehicle is always covered by insurance and avoid disputes in claims.
The steps are simple. You can purchase any of these additional coverages: i) named driver coverage or ii) all driver coverage on top of your comprehensive policy.
What happens if an unnamed driver drives your vehicle and participates in an accident?
You can still file an insurance claim. However, you will be charged with a mandatory excess of as much as RM400, noting that the individual is not named in your policy.
Purchase All Driver Coverage
To sum up, you should purchase all driver coverage in your insurance policy. The terms & conditions, however, vary across insurance providers. Some insurers allow you to name up to four individuals on the policy.
Therefore, if you often allow many individuals to use your vehicle, we suggest you purchase all driver coverage.
