Car Insurance: Third Party Policy Explained

    Third party car insurance policy

Car insurance is compulsory to protect drivers should any untoward accident happen while they are on the road.

Anything could happen in a split second. For example, you may crash your car by yourself, your vehicle may run into another car, or another car may run into your car. These situations may still occur even when you have taken precautions.

According to the law, all registered vehicles in Malaysia must have at least basic insurance coverage, a third-party insurance policy.

Having car insurance ensures protection for the driver and third party should anything happen.

Types of car insurance policies in Malaysia

Motor insurance coverage that you can get varies depending on the policy type you purchase. There are three types of car insurance policies in Malaysia: 1) Comprehensive policy, 2) Third party, fire and theft policy, and 3) Third party policy.

A comprehensive policy is usually the most expensive because it provides extensive coverage. Meanwhile, the most basic and affordable policy is a third-party insurance policy.

What is covered under a third-party insurance policy?

A third party car insurance policy only provides coverage to the third party

Previously, Bjak explained the importance of purchasing a comprehensive insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage. A comprehensive policy provides the most extensive coverage for your vehicle and the third party, which explains its slightly higher price than the other two policies.

Unlike a comprehensive insurance plan, third-party insurance only extends its coverage to the third party. If you are the party at fault, you have to bear any damage to your vehicle. Even if you are not at fault, you cannot make an insurance claim on your insurance policy. Your insurance policy will only compensate the third party.

Who is eligible to purchase a third-party insurance policy?

This type of policy is usually for those with a 15-year-old vehicle and above.

Can an owner of a 10-year-old vehicle purchase a third-party policy?

This policy is not permissible for vehicles aged 10 years and below. They must be covered by comprehensive insurance.

When can you get third-party insurance?

You may get third-party insurance if your car is quite old, which is 15 years or above.

However, we encourage getting a third-party, fire, and theft policy if your vehicle is eligible for it.

Can you purchase add-on covers under third-party insurance?

Most insurance companies do not offer additional coverage for third-party insurance policies.

They may encourage vehicle owners to opt for a comprehensive insurance policy to enable them to get additional coverage.

However, some insurers allow policyholders to purchase additional covers. For example, Allianz Insurance offers legal liability protection to passengers as additional coverage for third-party policies.

Do all insurers offer third-party insurance?

Some insurance providers do not offer third-party insurance. You may check with your preferred insurer whether they provide the policy.

You hit another car, and it caused damage to your vehicle. Can you claim the repair cost for your vehicle with a third-party policy?

No. Third-party insurance only covers the damage to the third party’s vehicle. As such, you will need to cover the repair cost of your vehicle yourself.

Another vehicle hits your car. Can you claim on your third-party insurance policy?

No. However, if you are not the party at fault, you can claim from the insurance company of the party at fault.

Is it worth getting third-party insurance?

You should only purchase third-party insurance if your vehicle is no longer eligible for a comprehensive or third-party, fire and theft policy.

If your vehicle is more than 10 years old, check with your preferred insurer whether you can still purchase a comprehensive policy.

This is to ensure that your vehicle has adequate coverage to avoid financial burden should any untoward incident happen in the future.

Get sufficient coverage for your car

Although a third-party policy is cheaper, note that the policy will not cover any damage or loss to your vehicle in an accident.

Make sure that your vehicle is adequately protected. You may opt for a comprehensive policy to ensure sufficient coverage.
