E2, E1, E Licences To Be Merged To Class E From March 1

E2, E1, E licences to be merged to Class E starting March 1

The Malaysian Driving Licence (LMM) for commercial vehicles of the existing Class E licences, namely E2, E1, and E, will be merged into one Class E licence effective March 1.

According to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, Class E2 and E1 licences are no longer available. The public can get a Class E license to drive heavy vehicles. He said the merger would simplify matters and save time.

He added that the move also widens employment opportunities for individuals working as commercial vehicle drivers, especially in the post-Covid-19 pandemic period.

The ‘Licence E class merge’ aims to facilitate heavy vehicle drivers

He said the merger aims to benefit the public in the long run.

“They can drive all classes of heavy vehicles (by having the Class E licence). Class E license is not limited to a certain category of weight without load (BTM) heavy vehicles.

“Previously, a person will have to go through a long process of taking one licence after the other.

“It requires additional financial expenses, time, and learning or testing process at the Driving Institute (IM),” he explained.

The E licence involves a motor vehicle with:

    • BTM exceeding 7,500 kg
    • E1 not exceeding 7,500 kg
    • E2 not exceeding 5,000 kg

Of the approximately 90,000 E1 and E2 licences on record, only about 62,000 are still active as of February 18, 2022. Only 11,000 of them are vocational licences.

Of the approximately 90,000 E1 and E2 licence holders on record, only about 62,000 are still active. Of the number, only 11,000 have a vocational licence.

Existing E1 and E2 licence holders have to undergo a transition program to get the E licence

Wee said existing E1 and E2 licence holders need to undergo a transition program to obtain the E Licence.

The application for the transition program starts on March 1. In addition, all individuals involved have five years to go through the transition program.

The transition program is also open to vocational licence holders in Class E1 and E2 to get the Class E vocational licence.
