Vehicle owners must renew their roadtax annually before they can hit the road.
It is known as the Motor Vehicle License (LKM) issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to all registered vehicle owners regardless of the type or class of vehicle.
Road tax and vehicle insurance are designed to work in tandem. That said, you cannot renew your roadtax without insurance. Therefore, you must renew your insurance before proceeding with roadtax renewal.
To your knowledge, not having a valid road tax will also put you at risk of being summonsed by the authorities.
Cancelling your roadtax
Can you cancel your roadtax after renewing it?
Yes, you can. Just like car insurance, you can cancel the roadtax if needed. There are two reasons to cancel a roadtax:
- You want to sell your car but the roadtax is still active
- You intend to change insurance company due to some reasons
The procedure to cancel road tax is the opposite of the procedure to obtain road tax.
This means you have to cancel the car road tax first. You may proceed with the cancellation of the car insurance upon cancellation.
Steps to cancel off-car road tax
The followings are the steps you need to take to cancel the car roadtax:
- Provide a copy of your identity card (original/old car owner) and the original grant
- Visit the bank to collect the bank statement with the bank officer’s confirmation stamp
- Take out your car roadtax
- Bring the car road tax, grant, copy of identity card and bank statement to JPJ
- Fill out the roadtax cancellation form
- Please inform the officer at the JPJ counter if you want to request for excess roadtax money. You need to fill in the JPJ K6 form for a refund
- The refund process will take approximately 1 month
That all! Easy, isn’t it? Make sure the purpose of your road tax cancellation follows the requirement.
