Have you still not renewed your long expired roadtax yet? Has it been a year, two, or three years already since it expired?

Read on as we share more information regarding road tax expiry and renewal.

Puspakom inspection for expired roadtax exceeding 3 years

Puspakom inspection for expired roadtax exceeding 3 years

Previously, the original grace period for an expired road tax before the Pusat Pemeriksaan Kenderaan Berkomputer (PUSPAKOM) inspection was mandatory for one year.

Starting September 2021, private cars and motorcycles with expired road tax for a period of no more than three years will be able to renew their road tax without having to undergo a Puspakom inspection. The relaxation was made following financial constraints faced by vehicle owners in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

If your vehicle road tax has exceeded 3 years/36 months, your vehicle must undergo and pass the necessary inspection by Puspakom.

The inspection is compulsory to ensure that your vehicle is still in a good condition and safe to be used on the road.

The Puspakom inspection is compulsory as a condition to renew your vehicle road tax that has expired more than 3 years old.

Note that you can only renew your road tax at Puspakom through an appointment. You are not allowed to walk in without a prior appointment.

    1. Visit Puspakom’s official website
    2. Click ‘Make an appointment now’
    3. Choose the state and your preferred Puspakom centre
    4. Choose date and time
    5. Fill in your details and click ‘Book’
    6. Complete. You will receive a confirmation email for the appointment

*Note: Please set the appointment 2 days earlier before the inspection date

Make sure your vehicle is in good condition

Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. You may want to avoid any trouble to ensure your vehicle can pass the Puspakom inspection at ease!

As such, please check your car headlights, tires, brake, and others.

    Get a temporary travel permit

Some may feel that this is unnecessary and the procedure is time-consuming. Therefore, they prefer to skip this step and just drive illegally without a valid road tax.

Beware, you may not want to test your luck and get summoned on a roadblock for driving without an active road tax.

Therefore, we advise you to be a responsible driver by getting the permit first.

You can go to any nearby JPJ branch to request a temporary travel permit at JPJ. You will need to fill in the form (JPJ K12). For your convenience, you may download the form (JPJ K12) from the JPJ website before coming to the branch.

Other than that, you will need to provide these documents:

    • Original vehicle grant
    • MyKad
    • Driving licence

    Inspection day

On the inspection day, make sure you bring the necessary documents:

    • Vehicle grant
    • MyKad
    • Driving licence
    • Temporary travel permit.

You need to register at the counter first, make payment and wait until the inspection is complete. Usually, the procedure will include an inspection of the brake, signal lights, and others.

You will receive the inspection report/certificate on the same day if your vehicle passes the examination. Upon receiving the certificate, make sure you renew your vehicle road tax within 30 days.

But if your vehicle failed the examination, you may come again to sit for a re-examination within the next 30 days. Please make sure you identify your car problem in the first place and take the necessary step to repair it before the inspection.
