Road tax is mandatory for all vehicles, hence renewing on time is crucial to ensure the vehicle can be operated legally on public roads. The price of road tax for vehicles is primarily decided based on two factors. One being the vehicle type and the other being its engine capacity.
For motorcycles, road tax prices are generally cheaper because they are the smallest motor vehicles of all sorts. However, several other factors, such as geographical location and renewal method also play a part in determining how much one pays for their bike’s road tax in Malaysia. Here’s a guide to how much you will have to pay for your bike’s road tax yearly.
Motor road tax price
As mentioned above, the main factor in determining the price of a motor roadtax is the engine capacity. The general rule of thumb here is that the larger the engine capacity of the bike, the more expensive or higher its road tax.
The table below consists of the prices of road tax for motorcycles of different cubic capacities in East and West Malaysia.
Cubic capacity (cc) | West Malaysia price | East Malaysia price |
< 150 | RM2 | RM2 |
151 – 200 | RM30 | RM9 |
201 – 250 | RM50 | RM12 |
251 – 500 | RM180 | RM30 |
501 – 800 | RM250 | RM40 |
> 800 | RM350 | RM42 |
Does the price change?
The road tax price is usually a fixed amount every year provided that you use a bike of the same model and engine capacity. Nonetheless, the price may vary depending on your location, renewal platform and processing fee charged.
For instance, if you renew road tax at post office or via JPJ counters, you will need to pay an additional RM2.00 as the processing fee.
Here is a sample calculation of the total price:
Roadtax renewal for motorcycles under 150 cc = RM2
Processing fee = RM2.00
Total payable = RM4.00

Road tax renewal period
There are two vehicle road tax renewal periods in Malaysia. One is for 6 months (bi-annual renewal) and the other is for 1 year (annual renewal).
Though vehicle owners can choose to renew their road tax between the two, certain circumstances require renewal of roadtax for a period of 6 months only. This happens when:
- The owner of the motorcycle has died and you as the next of kin want to renew the road tax on the owner’s behalf.
- The insurance period is insufficient for the 12-month roadtax period. This usually happens when you forget to renew the roadtax that has been renewed for a period of 6 months before.
