The start of the new year has brought about some exciting news for Malaysian vehicle owners as the government has announced a new alternative to renew car road tax and driver’s licence online. Yes, Malaysians can now renew their driver’s licence and road tax online via the MyJPJ application from Feb 1, 2024. Read on to find out more details on this exciting news.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has recently announced that the MyJPJ application will support a new function which enables the public to renew their vehicle road tax and driver’s licence online. For the uninitiated, the MyJPJ application was launched by the Ministry of Transport in February 2023 to enable Malaysians to view their road tax and driver’s licence effortlessly.

It was launched as part of the government’s efforts to digitise JPJ’s services, such as road tax and licence renewal. The digitisation effort allowed private vehicles to no longer display the motor vehicle licence, commonly referred to as the road tax disc or Lesen Kenderaan Motor (LKM). The current move adds to that mission by saving the public’s time and costs to perform renewals. This will reduce waiting times at the road transport department’s (JPJ) counters.

Loke also said that as a start, the new feature would only be enabled for Malaysians. To encourage the use of online renewals, the government will be providing an RM5 rebate to anyone renewing their driving licence digitally via the app. The rebate will expire on Dec 31, 2024.

    Share digital road tax

Speaking at a press conference at the Selangor JPJ headquarters in Shah Alam, Loke also said that starting Jan 2, 2024, the public can also share their digital road tax with family members, friends or other individuals authorised by the vehicle owner through the MyJPJ app through a new function called “Kongsi LKM”.

To do this, vehicle owners need to click on the vehicle’s licence plate number and then click the ‘Kongsi LKM’ button to share their digital roadtax with the authorised individual. Vehicle owners can set a sharing time limit for how long they wish to share the road tax with the authorised individual. This feature is extremely useful for people who share vehicles with friends or family members.

For the sharing feature, an activation code will be sent via the MyJPJ app to the recipient who will then need to enter it to activate sharing. The app will delete sharing records if the activation is not performed within 24 hours. This will be done for security purposes, according to Loke.
