Are you one of those individuals who is still confused about getting travel insurance? Do you still have questions to ask about when to buy it and what you can do with it?
If yes, worry not, as we will answer some common questions on travel insurance in this article. Have a read to clarify your doubts.
Can I buy it after booking my flight?
Yes, you can. If you booked your flight ticket months in advance, you still have ample time to buy a travel insurance plan. However, this differs from the add-on option you would find when booking your flight ticket.
The travel insurance with your flight ticket (typically offered by airline companies) can only be purchased during booking. You must get travel insurance separately if you fail to include it in your booking.
Can I buy it on the same day as my vacation?
You can buy travel insurance on the same day as your vacation date, but we don’t encourage it for two reasons. First, most policies have a ‘cut-off date’ by which you must purchase to be eligible for coverage.
For example, if you plan to travel on 17 June 2023, you must purchase the insurance at least by 16 June 2023 to be eligible for coverage.
Second, the premium for your travel insurance plan may be more expensive if you only get it closer to your departure date. The insurance company might consider you a high-risk passenger if you buy insurance at the last minute.
Can I get it when I’m abroad?
Most people prefer getting travel insurance for overseas vacations. But what happens if you only remember to get one when you have already started your holiday abroad? Are you still eligible and able to buy it?
The short answer is yes. However, not all insurance companies will sell or provide cover to those already abroad on holiday, and the coverage may be limited.
For example, you may get lower compensation if your belongings are lost, and you will not get some benefits, among other things. Therefore, remember to get covered before your vacation starts to enjoy the perks.
Can I use travel insurance to change my flight details?
No, you can’t. Your insurance policy does not cover the cost of changing flight details. However, suppose you need to change your flight due to the inevitable, such as the death of a family member or illness. In that case, most insurance providers will reimburse you for any related changes.
Can I cancel my travel insurance if I change my mind?
Nope. The insurance company will not reimburse charges if you want to cancel your travel insurance policy due to a sudden change of mind.
Nonetheless, a refund will be given to you for reasonable reasons such as illness, natural disaster or the death of a family member. Hence, it’s always a good idea to ensure that you only sign up for travel insurance when you have finalised your vacation.
