Types of Car Insurance Policies: Learn the Differences

As a smart vehicle owner, you should know that not all car insurance is created equal – there are three different types of car insurance policies available in the market, each providing different types of protection. This article will explain these three policies in detail, so you can make an informed decision and choose the right one for you.

    Comprehensive Insurance Policy

A comprehensive insurance policy offers the most extensive protection to the policyholder and is also known as first-party insurance. It provides protection to the vehicle for various situations such as damage, fire, and theft, as well as third-party protection. This policy covers events that result in loss and damage to your own car, including

    • Collisions or rollovers due to accidents
    • Mechanical damage
    • Wear and tear
    • Damage from falling objects (subject to certain exclusions)
    • Fire and explosion
    • Lightning strikes
    • Broken front/rear windows
    • Sunroofs and tinted/wrapped films
    • Break-ins
    • Burglary or theft

Comprehensive insurance is usually required for new cars and also for cars up to 10 years old. While for cars over 15 years old, most insurance companies recommend Third-Party, Fire, and Theft (TPFT) insurance coverage.

    Third-Party, Fire, and Theft Insurance

Third-Party, Fire, and Theft insurance is a type of coverage that protects your vehicle from theft and fire, but doesn’t cover damages or accidents. While it may be cheaper than comprehensive insurance, it’s best suited for older or rarely used vehicles.

    Third-Party Insurance Policy

A third-party insurance policy is the most basic policy that can be held by a vehicle owner, and it is a legal requirement in Malaysia for all vehicle owners to have at least this policy to ensure that their vehicle is legally used on public roads.

The third party referred to in this policy is any individual involved in an accident with you (where the accident is caused by you).

This policy provides protection only to the third party, including any damage or loss incurred by the third party as a result of the accident caused by your own vehicle.

Essentially, this policy offers very limited protection as you can only use it for third-party claims, and you have to repair any damage to your own vehicle using your own money.

To help you better understand, below is a summary of the differences between the three types of car insurance policies.

Choosing the right type of car insurance policy

Here are three factors to keep in mind when making your decision:

    Vehicle Age

Before you decide on which car insurance to get, make sure it suits your car’s age. Don’t go overboard or be under-protected for your ride.

If you own an old car that’s more than 15 years old, a third-party, fire, and theft policy might be your best bet. You’ll save on the cost of repairs, and it’s easier on your wallet. But if you have a new car that’s just a few years old, go all-in with comprehensive insurance. It’s like a suit of armour for your car, protecting it from any unforeseen dangers.

    Frequency of car usage

How often do you use your car? If you’re a frequent driver, it’s important to make sure you have comprehensive car insurance. This type of policy provides more extensive coverage, giving you peace of mind no matter where you go. Even if your car is over a decade old, a comprehensive policy can protect it from accidents and theft while you’re out and about.

    Amount of Coverage

If your car is more than a decade old but still worth more than RM10,000, don’t take any chances with its protection. Choose comprehensive coverage to safeguard your vehicle and avoid potentially high repair costs.

Choose the Car Insurance Protection that Suits You

Understand the types of insurance protection, take a closer look at the three types of policies offered by insurance companies and choose the one that fits you best. Prevent yourself from getting your vehicle over or under-protected. Don’t take any chances – protect your car with the right insurance policy!
