    Vehicle owners displaying a ‘fancy’ plate number or who do not follow the set standards are liable for fines up to RM2,000 or imprisonment.

    According to The Road Transport Department (JPJ), the legal action is inaccordance withh Section 119 (2) Road Transport Act 1987.

    JPJ director Datuk Khairul Khar Yahya explained that the offence of displaying a plate number, not by the specifications under Rule 6, Motor Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Rules 1959 can be punished with a compound not exceeding RM250.

    “They are liable for a fine not exceeding RM2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both, accordingly.”

    Abide the law using the lawful plate number

    Registered owners using a fancy plate number will receive a Vehicle Use Prohibition Notice (PG1).

    In brief, they have 10 days to go through a car inspection at any JPJ to revise the plate number.

    “They are given ten days to attend an inspection at any nearby JPJ to ensure that the vehicle has been taken corrective action by changing the registration number that follows the specifications,” Khairul said.

    What is a fancy plat number?

    To begin with, a fancy plate number refers to a vehicle registration number that does not follow the standards or specifications set by JPJ. It includes in terms of:

    • Font size and vehicle plate number
    • The type of ‘font’ used on the letters and numbers of vehicle plates
    • The distance between the letters and the vehicle plate number
    • Black frame size of vehicle plate

    The format for vehicle plate numbers is typically similar for any type of motor vehicle. As such, they include private, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, emergency vehicles, and selected heavy equipment as well (such as cranes mounted on trucks).

    All vehicle plate numbers in Malaysia must use white characters with a black background for the front and rear of the car. However, this is an exception for taxis, vehicle dealers, and diplomats.
