KL is known for so many things worldwide, including traffic jams. Every year tens of thousands of people flood the capital city of Malaysia in search of job opportunities. So, traffic conditions in many parts of Kuala Lumpur weaken as millions of cars move in and out daily.
The federal government is aware of this problem and actively seeks ways to curb the unbearable traffic congestion. Hence, it will implement contraflow lanes at three locations within KL from 3 July 2023.
Contraflow at three locations
Following Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) proposal, the transport ministry will add three contraflow lanes to ease the traffic jam in KL, reports The Star. The first one will be from the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza to the Besraya intersection, which covers a distance of 2.4 km.
The second one will extend an existing contraflow lane southbound from Jalan Maharajalela to Taman Connaught. This route will extend to a 4km stretch during evening peak hours.
Meanwhile, the third contraflow lane will run from Ampang Point to Jalan Tun Razak over a 3km stretch on Jalan Ampang.
Short-term fix to ease traffic jam
According to the transport ministry, the first and second routes will be accessible to all private vehicles except motorcycles. However, the third route is only for public transport vehicles such as buses.
Authorities will take action against private vehicle owners that use this lane during peak hours. All contraflow lanes will be activated daily from 6 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 7 pm.
In case you wonder, there are no structural changes to the existing roads in KL. Authorities will mark the designated lanes by placing cones along the route.
This will be a short-term fix to the problem. At the same time, the government is looking for ways to improve traffic conditions throughout Klang Valley, such as changing people’s attitudes and improving public transportation.

Most of us agree that driving around KL during peak hours can be daunting as the traffic jams worsen daily. So, it’s best to consider public transportation or carpooling as an alternative.
It’s good that the government is implementing temporary measures to ease the weakening traffic conditions in Klang Valley. Hopefully, there will be long-term solutions to benefit everyone in the near future.
