Unable to Renew Roadtax? Here Are 3 Main Reasons Why!

All Malaysian vehicle owners are subject to renewing their roadtax. Each individual must possess a valid road tax before using their car legally on the road.

According to the Road Transport Act 1987, people may either renew their road tax every 6 or 12 months.

However, there are several cases where vehicle owners cannot renew their road tax, resulting in their vehicles being unable to be driven on the road.

Reasons why you are unable to renew roadtax

Here are several reasons that cause failures to proceed with road tax renewal:

    Outstanding summons

Outstanding summons – specifically blacklisted summons may hinder your renewal process be it online or offline.

During the renewal process, your outstanding summons and blacklist records will be reflected in The Road Transport Department (JPJ) and The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) database systems.

The blacklisted summons refers to offenders/vehicles with a summons that has been issued. However, the offenders may have failed to settle their fines after a specified period as decided by the authorities.

In most cases, people would get blacklist summons during roadblocks by JPJ/PDRM. Examples of offences are:

    • No driving license or expired license
    • Expired car roadtax and insurance
    • Do not use the seatbelt/helmet

You cannot renew your road tax if you have outstanding summonses. Therefore, make sure to clear them first.

You may opt to pay the summons using online platforms such as MYBAYAR SAMAN, or MyEG.

Roadtax expiration period exceeding 3 years

If your road tax’s expiration exceeds 3 years/36 months, you will have to submit your vehicle to PUSPAKOM for an inspection.

If the inspection at PUSPAKOM is approved, you can start renewing the road tax for your vehicle.

You have not renewed your insurance yet

To your knowledge, you cannot renew your road tax without renewing your insurance.

That said, you will not be able to proceed with road tax renewal without valid insurance. Do not waste your energy renewing your road tax at any JPJ branches or post office if you have yet to renew your expired insurance. You may use online platforms such as Bjak to renew your insurance!
