What is EV car insurance?

EV car insurance is motor insurance for electric vehicles such as BYD, Tesla, Proton e.MAS, Chery, MG, BMW i and Mercedes-EQ models.

In Malaysia, an EV is generally insured under a private-car comprehensive motor policy rather than a completely separate type of motor insurance. The basic protection works in much the same way as it does for a petrol car.

What changes is what you are insuring

An EV may have a high-value battery, home charging equipment and other electric-specific components. Some insurers therefore offer EV extensions covering home wall chargers, charging cables, charging-related liability and out-of-charge assistance.

The exact benefits, limits and exclusions depend on the insurer and policy. Before buying, check the Product Disclosure Sheet (PDS) and the policy terms.

What does EV insurance cover?

An EV gets the same base cover as any private car. On top of that, some insurers add protection written for electric vehicles.

Standard comprehensive cover

Own damage

Damage to your own car from accidents.

Fire

Fire damage to your car.

Theft

Theft of your car.

Third-party injury

Bodily injury to, or the death of, other people.

Third-party property

Damage to other people's property.

EV protection some insurers add

EV battery protection

For one of the most valuable components of the car.

Home wall charger

The charging unit installed at your home.

Portable charging cable

The cable you carry to charge away from home.

Charging-related liability

Your liability for incidents that happen while charging.

Public charging incidents

Incidents at a public charging point.

Out-of-charge towing

A tow when the battery runs out.

Mobile charging assistance

Charging help brought to where you are.

EV-specific flood protection

Flood cover written for an electric vehicle.

Not every policy includes all of these benefits, and the limits and covered events vary between insurers. For a wider comparison of optional protection, see our guide to car insurance add-ons.

What makes EV insurance different?

Three things set an EV policy apart from a petrol one.

What to check on battery cover

  • Whether battery damage from an accident is covered
  • How battery damage from flood or water ingress is treated
  • Whether battery-related exclusions apply
  • How the sum insured is determined

Don't assume every type of battery damage is automatically covered.

Does EV insurance cover the battery?

It depends on what caused the damage.

Accident

Check your comprehensive policy.

Fire

Check the policy's fire protection.

Theft

Check how the battery is treated under the policy.

Wear and degradation

Usually not covered by motor insurance.

Mechanical or electrical failure

Check exclusions and any separate warranty.

Flood or water damage

Check Special Perils or EV-specific protection.

Normal battery wear and degradation are generally not the same as accidental damage. Your car manufacturer's battery warranty may apply to certain battery defects or degradation instead.

How much does EV car insurance cost in Malaysia?

There is no fixed price for EV car insurance.

What your premium can depend on

  • Your EV's insured value
  • Vehicle model
  • Driver profile
  • Location
  • NCD
  • Type of cover
  • Selected add-ons
  • Insurer

Motor insurance pricing has been liberalised in Malaysia, so insurers can assess risk and price cover differently. This means two insurers can quote different premiums for the same EV.

Your premium can also change depending on your NCD, sum insured, vehicle and selected protection. For a quick estimate, try the EV insurance calculator.

How to get cheaper EV insurance

A lower premium only helps if the cover still fits your EV. These are the levers that actually move the price.

Do

  • Keep your NCD

Your NCD can reduce your private-car premium by up to 55% after five or more claim-free years, subject to the applicable terms. Check yours with the NCD checker.

  • Check the EV-specific benefits

A slightly higher premium may provide benefits that matter to you, such as charger protection or out-of-charge assistance.

  • Choose add-ons based on your needs

Consider Special Perils, windscreen cover, charger protection, EV-specific protection and personal accident cover. Compare car insurance add-ons before choosing.

Avoid

  • Under-insuring your EV

A lower sum insured can affect the amount you receive if you make a claim. Learn more about sum insured.

  • Renewing automatically

Prices and benefits vary between insurers, so compare quotes instead of automatically renewing with the same provider.

EV insurance vs petrol car insurance

The key difference is not that EVs require an entirely different form of motor insurance. It is the additional risks and components that come with owning an electric vehicle.

EV car insurance FAQs

It can be, but there is no single EV insurance price. Premiums depend on factors such as the vehicle's insured value, risk profile, NCD, location and selected cover.

EVs can be insured under comprehensive, TPFT or third-party motor insurance. Comprehensive cover provides protection for your own vehicle as well as third-party liabilities.

Battery damage may be covered when it results from an insured event, depending on the policy. Normal wear and degradation are generally different from accidental damage and may fall under the manufacturer's warranty instead.

Some EV insurance products provide home wall charger protection. Check the benefit limit and covered events before buying.

Some EV-specific products cover portable charging cables. The limit and covered events vary between insurers.

Standard motor policies generally do not automatically cover flood and other natural perils. Special Perils or another relevant extension may be required.
