What Determines Roadtax Prices in Malaysia?

You may have noticed that roadtax prices in Malaysia vary across cars. For instance, the roadtax price for a BMW car may be higher than the roadtax price for a Proton car. But do you know why the roadtax prices differ?

    Answer: Not the car brand.

Let’s take a look at the factors that determine roadtax prices in Malaysia.

    Engine capacity

The engine capacity (cc) of your car determines the amount that you have to pay for your roadtax.

The number that follows each car model, for instance, 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0, refers to the engine capacity of the car.

Take Proton Wira 1.3 and Proton Wira 1.8, for example. Each number actually refers to the engine capacity of the specific car model. 1.3 means that the car engine capacity is about 1300cc, while 1.8 means that the car engine capacity is about 1800cc. As you may guess, the roadtax price for Proton Wira 1.8 is higher as it has a higher engine capacity,

The bottom line is a higher engine capacity translates to a higher roadtax price.

Your car engine capacity is only the first factor that determines your roadtax price. Where your car is registered in Malaysia also plays a big part, as our next point clarifies.

Vehicle engine capacity affects roadtax prices

    Geographical location (West Malaysia/East Malaysia/Labuan/Langkawi/Pangkor)

Roadtax prices also vary across geographical locations.

Depending on the engine capacity, the roadtax prices for vehicles registered in East Malaysia i.e. Sabah and Sarawak, are lower compared to the roadtax prices for vehicles in West or Peninsular Malaysia. Within both regions, roadtax prices for vehicles in Langkawi, Pangkor and Labuan are lower.

However, note that the roadtax price for cars with engine capacity smaller than 1000cc is RM20.00 in all locations in Malaysia.

For cars in Langkawi and Pangkor with engine capacity larger than 1000cc, the roadtax prices are 50% or half of the roadtax prices in West Malaysia. For cars in Labuan with engine capacity larger than 1000cc, the roadtax prices are only 50% of the roadtax prices in Sabah and Sarawak.

Vehicle body type (saloon vs non-saloon)

The next factor is the vehicle body type. Generally, there are two vehicle body types which are saloon and non-saloon.

The roadtax prices for private saloon vehicles are lower than the roadtax prices for company saloon vehicles. However, for non-saloon vehicles, the roadtax prices are the same for both private and company vehicles.

    Car ownership and usage

If your car is registered under a company, it will be classified as a commercial car. The roadtax prices for company cars are usually higher than the roadtax prices for private cars, except for non-saloon cars, whereby the roadtax prices are the same.
