Similar to insurance and road tax, there is also a penalty if you delay renewing your expired driving licence. So make sure to always check its validity from time to time.

Cost of renewing your driving license
You need to renew your driving licence before it expires to avoid summons. You may choose the validity duration of your driving license.
The following is the renewal cost of Class D (car driving license) by year.

How much do of penalty/fines you need to pay for driving with expired licence
You are liable for fines if you drive without a valid driving licence. The following is the amount that you have to pay over time.

| 16 – 30 days | RM200 |
| 31 – 60 days | RM300 |

Offline renewal
The followings are the list of places that you can go for physical renewal.
Post Office (Post Malaysia)
You need to present your MyKad and your existing driver’s licence.
Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ)
You may visit ant nearest JPJ office to renew your driver’s licence. You need to present your MyKad and your existing driver’s licence.
Urban Transformation Centre (UTC)
Most UTCs have attached their JPJ branches to their building. Therefore, you may renew your driving licence here.
You can check for further information on their website regarding their venues, operating hours, and others.
Online renewal
Offline renewals require you to spend your time and energy. As such, you may have to wait longer. To avoid such consequences, you may simply renew it online.
MyJPJ app
You can renew your driving licence in the official JPJ app, MyJPJ, which has offered licence renewal since February 2024.
- Download the MyJPJ app and log in (register first if you do not have an account)
- Choose driving licence renewal
- Select how many years you want to renew for
- Check your details and pay online
- Your renewed licence appears in the MyJPJ app as a digital licence
The digital licence in MyJPJ is now the default, and you can show it at roadblocks. If you still want a physical licence, you can print one at a JPJ counter. Since 23 January 2026, JPJ no longer asks for proof of overseas travel to print it.
