In the past, vehicle owners in Malaysia had to display a physical road tax sticker on their vehicle. Today, the introduction of digital road tax (e-LKM) by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) means many eligible private vehicle owners no longer need to display a physical sticker.
From 1 February 2026, physical road tax slips also stopped being issued for Malaysian-owned private vehicles through the affected channels. So, which vehicles still need physical road tax?
Here’s what you need to know about the vehicle categories that may still be subject to physical road tax requirements.
Vehicle Category
Road Tax Requirement
Eligible private cars registered to individual Malaysian citizens
Can use digital road tax (e-LKM) through MyJPJ.
Eligible private motorcycles
Can use e-LKM, subject to JPJ eligibility rules.
Commercial vehicles, such as goods lorries and vans
May still be subject to physical road tax requirements depending on the vehicle category and JPJ regulations.
Private cars registered under a company
Check the applicable requirements based on the registration status and current JPJ procedures.
Vehicles owned by non-Malaysian citizens
Check whether physical road tax requirements apply based on the owner’s status and JPJ regulations.
Note: Road tax requirements may differ depending on the vehicle category and registered owner. Refer to the official MyJPJ FAQ for the latest information.
What Is Digital Road Tax (e-LKM)?
Digital road tax, also known as the electronic Motor Vehicle Licence (e-LKM), is the digital version of road tax. Eligible vehicle owners can access it through the MyJPJ app or other relevant JPJ digital channels.
If your private vehicle is eligible, you can show its digital road tax without sticking a physical road tax sticker on the windscreen.
However, digital road tax does not apply in the same way to every vehicle category. Some vehicles must continue to follow JPJ’s physical road tax procedures.
Which Vehicles Still Need Physical Road Tax?
The following categories may still be subject to physical road tax requirements.
1. Commercial Vehicles
Commercial vehicles, such as goods lorries, goods vans and public service vehicles, must continue to follow the physical LKM requirements set by JPJ.
The digital road tax rollout for these vehicles is different from the arrangement for eligible private vehicles registered to individual owners.
2. Company-Owned Private Vehicles
Private vehicles registered under a company or organisation may not qualify for digital road tax in the same way as private vehicles registered to individual Malaysian citizens.
Company vehicle owners should check the latest JPJ requirements and ensure that the correct road tax documentation is available.
3. Vehicles Owned by Non-Malaysian Citizens
Vehicles owned by foreign nationals may also be subject to physical road tax requirements.
If you are a non-Malaysian citizen, check the applicable procedure based on your vehicle ownership status and identification documents before renewing your road tax.
Important: Requirements may differ depending on the vehicle category and registered owner. For the latest information, refer to the official MyJPJ FAQ or the official JPJ website.
What About Private Cars and Motorcycles?
If your car or motorcycle is registered to an individual Malaysian citizen and is eligible for e-LKM, you can check its digital road tax through the MyJPJ app.
You do not need to display a physical road tax sticker on a vehicle that qualifies for digital road tax.
To check your digital road tax:
Open the MyJPJ app and log in.
Go to your profile or vehicle information.
Select the vehicle you want to check.
Review the e-LKM details and expiry date.
If someone else drives your vehicle, check the Kongsi LKM feature in MyJPJ to see how you can share access to the digital road tax.
The availability of physical copies depends on the vehicle category and JPJ’s current procedures. Although physical road tax slips stopped being issued for Malaysian-owned private vehicles through the affected channels from 1 February 2026, certain physical documents or printed copies may still be available where permitted.
Do not assume that every vehicle owner can obtain a physical sticker as before. Check with JPJ or your road tax renewal provider to confirm the options available for your vehicle.
What Should You Check Before Renewing Road Tax?
Before renewing your road tax, make sure:
Your motor insurance or takaful is valid for the requested road tax period.
Your vehicle and registered owner details are correct.
There are no restrictions preventing renewal.
You know whether your vehicle qualifies for e-LKM or must follow physical documentation requirements.
Many eligible private vehicles registered to individual Malaysian citizens can now use digital road tax without displaying a physical sticker.
However, commercial vehicles, company-owned private vehicles and certain vehicles owned by non-Malaysian citizens may still be subject to physical road tax requirements.
If you are unsure which rules apply to your vehicle, check the latest information through JPJ’s official channels before renewing your road tax.
Do I still need to display a road tax sticker on my car?
Not if your car is eligible for e-LKM. You can show your digital road tax through the MyJPJ app.
Which vehicles still need physical road tax?
Commercial vehicles, company-owned private vehicles and certain vehicles owned by non-Malaysian citizens may still be subject to physical requirements. Check with JPJ to confirm the rules for your vehicle.
Can I print my digital road tax?
Printing options depend on JPJ’s current procedures. Check the official MyJPJ FAQ for the latest guidance.
How can another person show the road tax if they drive my car?
The registered owner can check the Kongsi LKM feature in MyJPJ to share digital road tax access with another driver, subject to the current functions and requirements.
Do I still need to renew my road tax if I use the digital version?
Yes. Road tax must still be renewed before it expires. The digital format changes how the LKM is displayed; it does not remove the requirement to have a valid road tax.
