EV Car Insurance in Malaysia
An electric car is insured on the same comprehensive policy as a petrol car - the base cover, excess and NCD rules are identical. What changes is where the money is: a high-voltage battery that can be 30-40% of the car's value, a wall charger at home that no motor or home policy covers by default, and software that alters the car after purchase. This page explains how to insure an EV properly and what it costs.
- Same policy - comprehensive motor cover with the same third-party limits, excess and NCD as any car.
- What's different - battery value, high-voltage repairs, home charger and cable, OTA performance changes.
- EV extensions - Allianz EV Shield (free with its comprehensive policy) and Zurich EV Protect (from RM120) - both cover wall charger RM15,000, cable RM2,000, liability RM50,000.
- Cost - premiums track sum insured; EVs are pricier to insure mainly because they are pricier cars with pricier repairs.
EV insurance is comprehensive car insurance
There is no separate "EV policy" in Malaysia. An electric car is written on the same private car comprehensive policy as any other. That means everything on the comprehensive car insurance guide applies unchanged: unlimited third-party injury cover, RM3 million third-party property, own damage from accident, fire and theft up to the sum insured, the RM400 compulsory excess for young or unnamed drivers, betterment on cars aged five and over, and the NCD ladder from 0% to 55%. Third party and TPFT cover exist for EVs too, but almost no owner takes them: the car's value makes own-damage cover essential, and financed EVs require it.
What actually changes when the car is electric
The battery is the car
The battery is commonly 30-40% of an EV's value and is replaced, not repaired, after most collisions or water damage that reaches it. Two consequences: the sum insured must be right - an under-insured EV loses proportionally more at claim time than an under-insured petrol car - and an agreed value is worth pricing on a new EV, because early depreciation is steep and market-value payouts fall with it.
Repairs need certified workshops
High-voltage systems need trained technicians and isolated bays. Not every panel workshop has them. Before buying, ask the partner which EV-certified workshops are on its panel near you - after an accident is too late to find out.
Charging equipment is uninsured by default
A home wall charger is fixed to your house, not your car. A standard motor policy does not cover it, and most home policies do not list it either. The portable cable in your boot is an accessory. Only the EV extensions below insure them.
Water damage
Flood and high-voltage packs do not mix; a flooded EV is far more likely to be a total loss than a flooded petrol car. Special perils is close to mandatory on an EV parked at ground level - Zurich prices a dedicated EV version at the same 0.2% of sum insured.
Software implications
Over-the-air updates and paid performance unlocks can raise a car's power and value after purchase. Zurich's EV Protect includes cover for "Performance Upgrades and/or Over the Air (OTA) Updates" at 0.5% of sum insured so the insured value follows the car.
Running out of charge is a breakdown
Standard roadside assistance tows you to a workshop. EV extensions add towing to the nearest charging station or home, and Allianz runs mobile chargers in four cities.

Is EV car insurance more expensive in Malaysia?
Usually yes - but not because the car is electric. Since detariffication in 2017, premiums are set on the sum insured, the car's repair and parts cost, theft experience, and the driver's profile and NCD. EVs score higher on the first two: they are, on average, more expensive cars, and a battery or high-voltage component replacement is a larger, less competitive repair than a petrol equivalent. Like-for-like - an EV and a petrol car of the same market value - the gap is small, and several partners now price EVs competitively to build share as the market grows.
What you can control:
- Sum insured - set it to real market value, not the launch price; EV depreciation in the first two years is steep
- NCD - transfers from your previous car in full; check it on the NCD checker before quoting
- Compare - the same EV was quoted with a several-hundred-ringgit spread across partners in BJAK's comparisons; run it through the insurance calculator and the quote page
- Choose extensions deliberately - a free charger cover is worth taking; a paid one is worth it if you own a wall charger
EV insurance checklist
- Sum insured covers the battery. Insure at full current market value, or fix an agreed value on a new car. Confirm the partner's payout basis for battery damage.
- Special perils is on. Non-negotiable for an EV parked outdoors or in a basement. Zurich offers an EV-specific version at 0.2% of sum insured.
- Charger and cable are covered. Take the extension if you own a wall charger. Note the RM15,000 / RM2,000 / RM50,000 limits and check they fit your installation.
- An EV-certified panel workshop is near you. Ask the partner by name. Repairs at a non-certified shop can void warranty and delay claims.
- Windscreen cover matches the glass. EV windscreens carry cameras and sensors; set the glass sum insured to a real quote - see the windscreen insurance guide.
- Out-of-charge help is defined. Check whether towing goes to a charger or only to a workshop, and whether mobile charging is available where you drive.
EV road tax and renewing it with the policy
EV road tax is calculated on motor output in kilowatts rather than engine capacity. The current rates and how they are applied are on the road tax guide; the road tax renewal is done in the same BJAK checkout as the insurance, and the digital road tax appears in the MyJPJ app once the policy is active.
Insuring the EVs Malaysians actually buy
The insurance questions are the same across BYD, Tesla, Proton e.MAS, Chery, Ora, Neta, BMW i and Mercedes EQ models: current market value for the sum insured, certified repairer availability, and whether the partner's EV extension fits your charging setup. What varies is parts pricing and repair-network depth - newer brands with thin dealer networks can mean longer repair times, which is where a Compensation for Assessed Repair Time add-on (Takaful Malaysia pays RM50 a day up to 7 days) earns its premium. Model-by-model quotes are the only reliable comparison; the EV quote page returns all partners for your plate number in one step.
