What do the figures tell us?
Recorded prices varied widely by insurer
AIG had the highest median GWP at RM2,220, while Lonpac had the lowest at RM269. This does not mean every AIG policy costs more than every Lonpac policy.
The middle 50% of prices differed considerably
AIG's P25–P75 range was RM1,538–RM3,000, while Lonpac's was RM198–RM380. These ranges show the spread of recorded prices within the selected policies.
Insurers near the overall median had different price ranges
Takaful's median was RM613, RHB's was RM586 and Allianz's was RM563. Their P25–P75 ranges also differed, showing that prices can vary within each insurer.
The median difference is a benchmark, not a personal quote
The percentage difference compares each insurer's median with the overall median of RM600. It does not predict the price an individual customer will receive.
These differences may reflect variations in vehicles, sum insured, coverage and customer profiles. The data does not establish that insurer choice alone caused the price differences.
What do GWP, median and P25–P75 mean?
Gross written premium (GWP) is the premium recorded for an insurance policy. The median is the middle value when policy prices are arranged from lowest to highest.
- GWP
Premium recorded for an insurance policy.
- Median GWP
The middle price in the selected policies.
- P25
The 25th percentile: 25% of recorded prices fall at or below this value.
- P75
The 75th percentile: 75% of recorded prices fall at or below this value.
- P25–P75 range
The middle 50% of recorded prices.
- Difference vs. RM600
How far an insurer's median is above or below the overall median.
P25 and P75 are percentiles, not arithmetic averages. The figures provided for this dataset do not include the mean (average) GWP for each insurer.
How can you compare car insurance prices?
A lower median does not automatically mean an insurer will offer the lowest price for your vehicle. To compare options:
Choose your coverage: Learn about Comprehensive insurance and Third-Party, Fire and Theft insurance.
Compare available quotes: Use BJAK's car insurance comparison to explore options for your vehicle.
Review the policy details: Check the sum insured, excess, optional add-ons and exclusions before buying.
You can also use the BJAK car insurance calculator to estimate your price.
