What is flood cover?
Flood cover is commonly provided through an optional Special Perils extension to car insurance. Standard comprehensive car insurance generally does not cover flood damage unless the relevant protection is included in your policy.
Depending on the policy, Special Perils may cover specified events such as:
Floods
Storms and tempests
Landslides and landslips
Other specified natural disasters
Coverage and exclusions vary by insurer or takaful operator. Read BJAK's guide to Special Perils cover to understand how this add-on works.
Why consider flood cover for your car?
Floodwater can damage your car's engine, electrical systems and interior. Repairs can be expensive, especially if major components are affected.
Flood protection may be worth considering if you live in a flood-prone area, park at ground level, regularly drive through areas that flood or rely on your car for daily travel. Even if your neighbourhood rarely floods, sudden flash floods can still happen.
Bank Negara Malaysia provides information about motor insurance and extensions for specified natural disasters in its motor insurance FAQ.
How much does flood cover cost?
The price depends on your car's insured value, insurer or takaful operator, and the terms of the policy. There is no single price that applies to every car.
Before adding Special Perils, compare the additional premium, excess, claim limits and exclusions. Make sure you understand which flood-related events are covered before purchasing the policy.
How to check flood cover when buying or renewing insurance
Check your current policy. Look for Special Perils or flood protection in your policy documents.
Compare available options. Review the price and benefits offered by participating insurers and takaful operators.
Read the exclusions. Check the excess, claim limits and conditions for flood damage.
Confirm your coverage. Make sure the protection is included before completing your purchase.
