  • Sum insured affects your price. A higher sum insured usually means a higher premium.
  • Loading may increase your premium. It applies when an insurer assesses a higher risk.
  • NCD can reach 55%. It reduces your eligible premium.
  • Service tax is 8%. The rate increased from 6% on 1 March 2024.
  • Stamp duty is RM10. It is generally shown as a separate charge.

How your car insurance price is calculated

A typical premium breakdown includes:

  1. Base premium for your selected coverage.

  2. Any applicable loading.

  3. NCD deduction.

  4. Premiums for selected add-ons.

  5. 8% service tax on the taxable premium after applicable discounts.

  6. RM10 stamp duty.

The exact calculation and presentation may vary between insurers.

Base premium and loading

The base premium is the starting price for your car insurance before applicable discounts and add-ons. Your sum insured, vehicle details and coverage type can affect it.

Your sum insured also affects the maximum amount payable for a covered total loss or theft, subject to policy terms. Check whether your policy uses market value or agreed value.

Why do insurers charge different prices?

Motor insurance pricing was liberalised in stages. BNM introduced market-based pricing for new products and add-ons from 1 July 2016, followed by comprehensive and third party, fire and theft cover from 1 July 2017.

Each insurer can set its own prices and assess risk using factors such as vehicle details, driver profile and claims history.

What is loading?

Loading is an additional amount an insurer may charge when it considers a driver or vehicle to carry higher risk. It may relate to factors such as driver age or claims history.

Some insurers show loading separately, while others may include their risk assessment in the quoted premium. Ask your insurer if you are unsure why loading appears on your quotation.

NCD and add-ons

NCD: Your discount for claim-free years

The standard private car NCD scale is:

Claim-free yearsNCD
1 year25%
2 years30%
3 years38.33%
4 years45%
5 years or more55%

An at-fault claim may affect your NCD at the next renewal, subject to policy terms and applicable protections. Your eligible NCD can be transferred when you switch insurers.

Add-ons: Extra protection, extra cost

Add-ons increase your premium. In the insurer PDS examples reviewed, they are added after the NCD deduction, so NCD does not reduce their cost. Check your own quotation for the calculation used.

Service tax and stamp duty

  • Service tax: 8% since 1 March 2024, replacing the previous 6% rate.
  • Stamp duty: Generally RM10 per motor insurance policy.

Service tax is generally calculated on the taxable premium after applicable discounts or rebates. Check your insurer's quotation for the full breakdown.
