What does BJAK's data show?
The following figures come from BJAK's internal car insurance quote data, split by vehicle type. The data covers 5,143,368 petrol-car quotes across 4,609 models and 11,257 EV quotes across 146 models.
| Vehicle type | Average gross premium | Median premium |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol cars (ICE)5,143,368 quotes, 4,609 models | RM777 | RM625 |
| Electric cars (EV)11,257 quotes, 146 models | RM2,781 | RM2,325 |
Data note: EVs were identified using make and model names, including Tesla, BYD, Proton e.MAS, BMW i/iX, Mercedes EQ and Volvo EX/C40. Plug-in hybrids and other vehicles were grouped under ICE in this analysis. Figures reflect BJAK's internal quote data, not the entire Malaysian insurance market.
The average EV premium was RM2,004 higher than ICE, or 3.58 times the ICE average. The median gap was RM1,700. This difference may largely reflect EVs' higher insured values, as many are newer and more expensive. These are BJAK's internal quote figures, not guaranteed prices for every driver or market-wide averages.
Which EV models have higher insurance premiums?
BJAK's data also shows differences between EV models. The table below lists selected models with their quote counts, average gross premiums, median premiums and average premiums compared with the petrol-car average of RM777.
| EV model | Average premium | Median premium | Times petrol-car average |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD Atto 31,735 quotes | RM1,949 | RM1,825 | 2.51× |
| Tesla Model 31,652 quotes | RM3,499 | RM3,725 | 4.50× |
| Tesla Model Y1,205 quotes | RM3,847 | RM3,825 | 4.95× |
| Proton e.MAS 7871 quotes | RM2,084 | RM1,975 | 2.68× |
| Proton e.MAS752 quotes | RM2,108 | RM1,925 | 2.71× |
| BYD Seal730 quotes | RM2,583 | RM2,275 | 3.32× |
| BYD Dolphin491 quotes | RM1,566 | RM1,425 | 2.02× |
| BYD M6468 quotes | RM1,734 | RM1,475 | 2.23× |
| BYD Sealion 7449 quotes | RM2,609 | RM2,375 | 3.36× |
| BMW iX231 quotes | RM4,616 | RM4,125 | 5.94× |
Among these selected models, the BYD Dolphin had the lowest average premium at RM1,566, while the BMW iX had the highest at RM4,616. The BMW iX average was about 5.94 times the petrol-car average. These differences show why it's useful to compare prices by model instead of assuming all EVs have similar insurance costs.
Why can EV insurance cost more?
Higher insured value
Some EVs cost more to buy than many petrol cars. A higher insured value can affect the premium, although the final price also depends on the insurer's assessment and the coverage selected.
Repair costs and spare parts
EVs use high-voltage batteries and specialised components. Repair costs and parts availability may affect insurance pricing, but costs vary between models. Petrol cars can also have expensive repairs.
Different coverage and insurer pricing
Premiums can vary depending on your NCD, claims history, insured value, add-ons and insurer. Some policies also offer EV-specific benefits, such as protection for eligible charging equipment. Check the policy terms and exclusions before buying.
Is EV insurance always more expensive than petrol car insurance?
No. BJAK's data shows that EV premiums were higher on average in this dataset, but the figures do not prove that every EV costs more to insure than every petrol car. The vehicles included in each group are different, so the comparison should be treated as an overall trend rather than a direct comparison of identical cars.
To make a fair comparison, check quotes with suitable insured values and similar coverage. You can also use the BJAK NCD Checker to review your No Claim Discount before comparing available options.

Frequently asked questions
BJAK's internal data shows a higher average gross premium for EVs: RM2,781 compared with RM777 for petrol cars. However, prices vary by model, insured value, NCD, coverage and insurer.
The average is calculated by adding the premiums and dividing by the number of quotes. The median is the middle premium when the prices are arranged from lowest to highest. BJAK's data shows an average of RM2,781 and a median of RM2,325 for EVs.
The difference may partly reflect the mix of vehicles in the dataset. Many EVs are newer and have higher insured values than the average petrol car. Repair costs, coverage and insurer pricing can also affect premiums.
No. These figures come from BJAK's internal quote data. They are useful for understanding the prices recorded on BJAK, but they are not official market-wide averages or guaranteed prices for every driver.
