Multi-Vehicle Car Insurance: How to Insure More Than One Car in Malaysia

If you own two or more cars, each private car in Malaysia is normally insured under its own policy, with its own premium, NCD and renewal date. Businesses with multiple eligible vehicles may be able to arrange fleet insurance, subject to the insurer's requirements. This is different from standard private car insurance, where each vehicle generally has its own policy.

What is multi-vehicle car insurance?

It means insuring more than one vehicle owned by you, your family or your business. It works in two ways.

Separate policy for each carFleet policy
Usually forIndividuals and familiesBusinesses with several vehicles
Number of policiesOne policy per carOne policy for many vehicles
NCDEach car earns its own NCDDepends on the insurer's fleet terms
Renewal datesEach car has its own dateOften one date for the whole fleet

Every car on the road needs at least third-party cover, and you need valid insurance to renew road tax.

Can one policy cover two cars?

Not for privately owned cars. Each policy is issued for one car, so a second car needs its own policy, even with the same insurer. If your cars are registered under a company, see company car insurance.

How NCD works with more than one car

The No Claim Discount (NCD) rewards each claim-free year, from 25% after one year up to 55% after five years, according to Zurich Malaysia.

Claim-free yearsNCD
1 year25%
2 years30%
3 years38.33%
4 years45%
5 years or more55%
  • Each car has its own NCD entitlement, so two cars under the same owner can have different NCD levels.
  • A second car usually starts at 0% NCD. You may transfer your existing NCD to another eligible car registered in your name, but you cannot use the same NCD on two cars at once.
  • A claim under one car's policy generally affects that car's NCD, not the NCD of your other separately insured cars. However, certain claims may qualify for NCD protection under the policy terms.
  • NCD can move to a replacement car in your name, but not to another person.

Check each car's NCD with the BJAK NCD checker. For NCD transfers, see car insurance for used cars, new cars and special cases.

Is there a multi-car discount?

Multi-car discounts are not automatically available. Any discount or special arrangement depends on the insurer and the type of policy. Compare the final price for each car rather than assuming that insuring several cars with one provider will be cheaper. Each car's price depends on its own details, so the cheapest insurer for one car may not be the cheapest for another. Comparing each car separately is usually the better way to save.

Should all your cars be with the same insurer?

Not necessarily. One insurer gives you a single contact for claims, while different insurers let you pick the best price and cover for each car. The type of cover can differ too, for example comprehensive for a newer car and third party, fire and theft for an older one.

Who can drive each car?

If family members share your cars, check whether they are covered as authorised drivers. An additional compulsory excess of RM400 may apply when an unnamed driver is involved in an accident, so consider an all drivers add-on. An All Drivers add-on may waive this excess, subject to the insurer's terms and conditions. See insuring a car not registered in your name.
