Key findings from BJAK motorcycle insurance GWP data
Berjaya recorded the highest median GWP
RM237, which was 82.3% above the overall median of RM130.
Great Eastern recorded the lowest median GWP
RM92, or 29.2% below the overall median.
Insurer price distributions varied
Allianz and Zurich had median GWPs above RM200, while Tune, Tokio Marine and P&O recorded medians between RM102 and RM105.
The middle 50% of prices differed by insurer
Allianz's P25–P75 range was RM138–RM294, compared with RM77–RM120 for Great Eastern.
These figures show how GWP varied across selected BJAK policy sales during the period. A lower median does not guarantee the lowest price for every customer. The actual GWP depends on factors such as the vehicle, coverage, sum insured, eligibility and policy details.
What is gross written premium (GWP)?
Gross written premium (GWP) is the premium recorded for insurance policies written during a given period. Comparing GWP across insurers can help illustrate differences in the prices of selected policies, but the figures need to be interpreted in context.
- GWP
Premium recorded for an insurance policy.
- Median GWP
The middle premium when selected policy prices are arranged from lowest to highest.
- P25
The 25th percentile; 25% of selected policy prices fall at or below this value.
- P75
The 75th percentile; 75% of selected policy prices fall at or below this value.
- Difference vs. overall median
How far an insurer's median is above or below RM130.
For example, Great Eastern's P25–P75 range was RM77–RM120. This means the middle 50% of its selected policy prices fell within that range. It does not mean every customer will receive a quote within those values.
Note
Median GWP and percentile ranges do not show an insurer's arithmetic average GWP. To compare average GWP, the mean premium for each insurer must be calculated from the underlying policy-level data.

BJAK's sales data provides a reference for understanding GWP differences across insurers. In a separate cover-type analysis for the same period, the median GWP was RM207 for motorcycle Comprehensive and RM92 for motorcycle TP. These figures differ from the combined median of RM130 because they represent individual cover types rather than the combined selection.
