How do I know my insurance policy is active?

Direct answer

Your policy is active once the insurer or takaful operator has issued it and its effective date has started. Payment alone does not make you covered: payment triggers issuance, and issuance creates the cover.

What does an active policy mean?

An active policy means three things are true at the same time:

  • The provider has issued cover in your name - an insurer or takaful operator has accepted the risk and produced a document
  • The effective date has started - cover begins on that date, not on the day you paid
  • The policy has not yet expired or been cancelled - the expiry date is still in the future

If any one of those is not true, you are not covered. The most common gap is between payment and issuance: the money has left your account, but the provider has not yet issued the document.

Paid is not the same as covered. Treat the issued document as the proof, not the payment receipt - see Does payment mean my policy is already active?.

Where is the effective date shown?

The effective date - sometimes labelled "period of insurance", "period of takaful", "commencement date" or "cover from" - appears on the document the provider issued.

DocumentWhat to look for
e-Cover noteCover start and end dates
Insurance policy schedulePeriod of insurance, from and to
Takaful CertificatePeriod of takaful, from and to
BJAK accountOrder status and the issued documents attached to it

Check that the dates run continuously from your previous policy if this is a renewal. A gap between the old expiry and the new effective date is a period with no cover, even if both documents look correct on their own.

What confirmation should you receive?

After a successful purchase you should end up with:

  • A payment confirmation from BJAK - proof the transaction went through
  • An e-cover note, where the product uses one - this is the first evidence of cover
  • The policy schedule or Takaful Certificate - issued by the provider, this is the actual contract document
  • Road tax confirmation, where you selected road tax renewal

The payment confirmation comes from BJAK. The cover documents come from the insurer or takaful operator. Both should name the same provider you selected at checkout. Related: How do I receive my documents and updates?

What if payment succeeds but issuance is still processing?

This is normal for a short period. Your payment is confirmed, the order has gone to the provider, and the provider is completing underwriting and issuance.

What is happening

  • BJAK has received and confirmed your payment
  • Your order has been submitted to the insurer or takaful operator
  • The provider is issuing the cover document

What you should do

Important: until issuance completes, treat yourself as not yet covered. See Why is my policy not active yet?. If you need to drive and your previous policy has expired, contact BJAK support before relying on the pending order.

When should you contact BJAK?

Contact BJAK support if:

  • Your payment is confirmed but no cover document has been issued after the expected processing window
  • The effective date on your document is not what you selected
  • Your name, IC/NRIC or vehicle registration number is wrong on the issued document
  • The provider named on the document is not the one you selected
  • There is a gap between your previous policy's expiry and the new effective date
  • You cannot find your documents in your BJAK account

Have your order reference and payment confirmation ready. BJAK can check where the order sits with the provider and escalate it if it has stalled.

For questions about what your policy covers, contact the insurer or takaful operator named on the document - the coverage terms are theirs.

Frequently asked questions

  • Am I covered as soon as I pay? No. Payment starts the process. Cover begins when the provider issues your policy or certificate and the effective date is reached.
  • Can I backdate my cover to the day I paid? No. Motor cover cannot be backdated. This is why renewing before your current policy expires matters - it avoids a gap.
  • Is an e-cover note enough proof of cover? Yes, an e-cover note issued by a licensed provider is valid evidence of cover, including for road tax renewal. The full policy schedule or Takaful Certificate follows.
  • How do I check my policy is genuine, not just active? Verify the provider is licensed by BNM, and check the policy or certificate number and your details against the issuing provider's records. Related: How can I verify that BJAK is legitimate?
  • My policy is active but the details are wrong. What now? Raise it with BJAK immediately. BJAK submits the correction and the provider approves it. An error on an active policy can affect a claim.
