How do I verify my BJAK insurance policy is valid?
Check your issued documents against five things: the insurer's name, the policy or certificate number, your vehicle and personal details, the coverage dates, and the sum insured. The definitive confirmation always comes from the provider named on the document.
What to check
| Check | Where it appears | What it should show |
|---|---|---|
| Insurer or takaful operator name | Top of the policy schedule or certificate | The provider you selected, under its full registered name |
| Policy or certificate number | Policy schedule or certificate | A unique reference - this is what you quote when contacting anyone about the policy |
| Vehicle details | Policy schedule | Registration number, make, model, engine or chassis number, matching your grant |
| Policyholder details | Policy schedule | Your name and IC number, spelled exactly as on your IC |
| Coverage dates | Policy schedule | The start and end dates of cover, usually a 12-month period |
| Sum insured and coverage type | Policy schedule | The amount and coverage type you selected at purchase |
Check the insurer's name
Your cover is provided by the insurer or takaful operator named on the document, not by BJAK. Confirm two things:
- It is the provider you chose. The name on the document should match what you selected at checkout.
- It is licensed. Search the full registered name on BNM's Financial Services Provider Directory.
Check the policy or certificate number
Every issued policy carries a unique policy number, or a certificate number for takaful. It is the reference the insurer uses to find your record, and the first thing you will be asked for by anyone you contact.
Keep it accessible. You will need it for claims, endorsements, road tax and any support enquiry.
Check your vehicle and personal details
These are the details that matter most if you ever claim, because they are what identifies the vehicle and person covered.
- Vehicle registration number - matches your vehicle grant
- Make, model and variant - matches the vehicle you own
- Engine or chassis number - matches your grant
- Your name - spelled as on your IC
- Your IC number - digit for digit
If the details on the policy do not match the vehicle or person, it can cause problems when you claim.
Check the coverage start and end dates
Your policy shows an effective date and an expiry date. Cover runs between them. Two things worth knowing:
- Payment is not the same as cover. Coverage begins on the effective date issued by the insurer or takaful operator, which may not be the date you paid.
- Renewal does not extend automatically.
Check your issued documents
Typically you should have:
- A payment receipt or confirmation
- A cover note, where issued
- The policy schedule or takaful certificate
Documents are sent to the contact channels you provided at purchase, such as email and WhatsApp. You can also check your policy status through BJAK.
What if you cannot verify something?
If a detail is wrong - contact BJAK. BJAK raises an endorsement request with the insurer or takaful operator. Some details can be corrected quickly; others need the provider's approval, and a few cannot be changed after issuance.
If you have not received your documents - check your order status through BJAK first, then contact support.
If you want independent confirmation - contact the insurer or takaful operator directly with your policy or certificate number. They hold the definitive record, and this is the only check that does not depend on BJAK or on the document itself.
If you doubt the document is genuine - do not use contact details printed on the document itself. Find the provider's official number independently.
