What documents should I receive after buying insurance?

Direct answer

You should receive a payment confirmation from BJAK and a cover document issued by your insurer or Takaful operator - specifically, an e-cover note followed by a policy schedule or Takaful certificate. If your purchase included road tax renewal, you will also receive a road tax confirmation. The payment receipt serves as proof of payment, whereas the cover document proves that active coverage exists and should be reviewed carefully.

Not all insurance products issue every document listed above. For instance, a Takaful purchase generates a Takaful Certificate rather than an insurance policy schedule. Additionally, road tax documents are provided only if you selected that optional service.

Payment confirmation

This comes from BJAK as soon as your payment is processed. It should show:

  • The amount paid
  • The date and time of the transaction
  • Your order reference
  • The provider and product you selected

Retain this receipt for your records. If any discrepancies arise regarding your transaction, this document serves as official proof of payment.

Please note that a payment confirmation does not constitute proof of cover. It verifies the payment transaction only, not that the provider has issued active coverage. See Does payment mean my policy is already active?.

Policy schedule or certificate

This is the document that matters most. It is issued by the insurer or Takaful operator, and it is the actual contract.

Check every field on it:

  • Policyholder name: spelled exactly as on your IC/NRIC
  • IC / NRIC number
  • Vehicle registration number
  • Vehicle make, model and year
  • Policy or certificate number
  • Provider name: must match the one you selected
  • Period of insurance or takaful: the effective and expiry dates
  • Coverage type: comprehensive, third party fire and theft, or third party only
  • Sum insured: and whether it is agreed value or market value
  • Excess: the amount you pay on a claim
  • Add-ons: windscreen, flood, named drivers, towing, and any others you selected
  • Named drivers, where applicable

If you notice any errors or discrepancies, contact BJAK customer support immediately. Incorrect information on your policy schedule may lead to complications or delays during a claim.

Product-specific documentation

Some products come with extra documents:

  • Product Disclosure Sheet (PDS) - available before you pay, and worth keeping. It sets out coverage, exclusions, excess and any fees in plain terms
  • Add-on endorsements - where an optional benefit is recorded as a separate endorsement to the policy
  • Takaful-specific disclosures - where the operator publishes fund or surplus-sharing information for the product you bought

For Takaful products, note that your document is a Takaful Certificate, and the issuing entity is the Takaful operator, named on the certificate.

Road tax-related confirmation

Where you selected road tax renewal as part of your purchase, you should also receive:

  • Confirmation that the renewal has been submitted
  • Confirmation that the road tax has been issued
  • Delivery details, where a physical item is being sent

Road tax renewal requires valid, active motor insurance coverage first; therefore, these confirmation documents are always issued after your cover document. For details, see How do I check my road tax? and What can delay road tax renewal?.

How to get a copy if a document is missing

  • Check your BJAK account - issued documents are attached to your order
  • Check your email, including spam and promotions folders
  • Contact BJAK support with your order reference - BJAK can re-send documents it holds, and follow up with the provider for anything not yet issued

If a document has not yet been issued, BJAK support can trace the status of your order with the provider and request expedited processing.

Frequently asked questions

Which document do I present for road tax renewal?

You must provide the e-cover note or policy/certificate issued by a licensed insurance provider or Takaful operator, which must be active for the entire road tax period.

Will I receive a physical policy document?

Insurance policies are standardly issued in digital format. We recommend saving a digital copy and printing a paper copy to keep in your vehicle for reference.

How long should I keep these policy documents?

Retain your documents for at least the full policy term, and longer if you have an ongoing or pending insurance claim.

My policy number is missing from my documents. Is that a problem?

Yes - contact BJAK. You need the policy or certificate number to make a claim.

Do I get separate documents for Takaful?

You receive a Takaful Certificate instead of an insurance policy. The structure of the document set is otherwise similar.
